Corten Steel Facade Framing Views of an Icelandic Landscape with Timber Elements

Project in-detail

A corten steel facade frames panoramic views of the Icelandic landscape, complemented by sustainable CLT panels and a layout that invites community engagement in a welcoming café setting.
5 key facts about this project
01
Corten steel exterior develops a unique patina over time, complementing the natural landscape.
02
Three "spyglasses" strategically divide the interior while framing views of the volcano.
03
CLT panels provide structural support while enhancing thermal efficiency.
04
Geothermal energy systems minimize environmental impact and heating costs.
05
The café layout encourages both social interaction and private reflection areas.

Surt Kaffi is a unique building set in the distinctive landscape of Iceland, designed to offer a space for visitors to enjoy coffee and take in views of the nearby volcano. The setting greatly influences its design, which aims to connect with the surrounding environment. Inspired by the Norse God of Fire, "Surt," and the Icelandic word for coffee, "Kaffi," the concept ties together notions of warmth and community with the rugged beauty of nature.

Structural Design

The robust framework of Surt Kaffi relies on concrete columns and beams, ensuring strength and stability. Cross-Laminated Timber (CLT) panels form the outer shell of the building, chosen for both their thermal properties and visual appeal. This combination provides an energy-efficient solution, making the space comfortable for guests while minimizing environmental impact.

Spatial Configuration

Inside, three "spyglasses" create different areas, dividing the space into functional zones. Each section serves a purpose while framing views of the landscape outside. This arrangement encourages social interaction among visitors and allows for quiet moments of reflection. The design makes it easy to appreciate the surrounding scenery, enhancing the overall experience.

Material Palette

Corten steel encloses the exterior, known for its ability to withstand the elements and develop a rich texture over time. The steel's weathering properties complement the raw beauty of the landscape. Additionally, an inner layer of expanded polystyrene improves thermal insulation, ensuring a cozy environment regardless of the weather outside.

Details and Integration

Natural light floods the interior, creating an open and inviting atmosphere. The careful layout fosters connections between guests while also offering spaces for solitude. The thoughtful integration of these elements highlights the building's relationship with its setting, providing a memorable experience that draws visitors into the essence of Iceland’s natural environment.
