The architectural design project "In Between the Plates" situates itself at the convergence of tectonic activity, serving as a reflection of the relationship between human habitation and geological phenomena. Engaging with the unique landscape of Iceland, the project interprets the dynamics of tectonic plates through architectural expression, creating a space for interaction and contemplation. The facility comprises a climbing tower, communal areas, and sustainable pathways, each designed to encourage public engagement with both the architecture and the surrounding environment.

Architectural Functionality and Design Elements

The project serves multiple functions, including recreational, educational, and community-focused uses. Central to the design is the climbing tower, which not only provides elevated views of the striking landscape but also serves as an interactive element promoting physical activity. This tower embodies the core philosophy of the project, blending human experience with the natural landscape.

The Great Fire Pit acts as a focal point for gatherings, rooted in Icelandic tradition while providing a space for social interaction and cultural exchange. The careful arrangement of sustainable pathways ensures that visitors can navigate the site without disrupting the natural terrain, thus fostering a connection to the land.

Materiality and Sustainability

"In Between the Plates" utilizes a range of materials that emphasize durability and sustainability. Key materials include rammed earth for structural integrity, concrete for resilience, raw timber that integrates warmth and texture, and Corten steel that aligns with the rugged aesthetics of the landscape. This choice of materials is not only functional but also reflective of local geography, promoting a design ethos that respects the environment.

Unique Design Approaches

One of the defining aspects of this project is its emphasis on experiential engagement with the environment. The integration of the climbing tower and communal spaces uniquely positions this architecture as a conduit for physical interaction, allowing each visitor to explore their surroundings actively. By incorporating elements reminiscent of traditional Icelandic buildings, the project situates itself within cultural context while promoting a contemporary understanding of architecture.

The implementation of sustainable practices, including rainwater collection and geothermal energy systems, demonstrates a commitment to environmental responsibility. This approach aligns with Iceland's broader goals concerning sustainability and carbon neutrality.

To gain further insights into the architectural plans, sections, designs, and innovative ideas presented in "In Between the Plates," readers are encouraged to explore the project presentation. This will provide a more comprehensive understanding of how architecture can facilitate a harmonious relationship between human activity and the forces of nature.

The Next House: USA — A Global Call to Reimagine the American Suburb

`
Competition organisers

Buildner is launching The Next House: USA, a global architecture competition that challenges architects, designers, and thinkers to reimagine the American suburban home for the 21st century. For decades, the suburban house has symbolized comfort and stability, but today it often reflects excess, isolation, and environmental strain. This competition asks: how can the American home evolve to address climate urgency, economic pressures, and shifting social values?

Participants are tasked with designing a prototype home of no more than 1,500 sq ft (≈140 m²) for a household of two adults and one child. The design should be compact yet generous, adaptable, sustainable, affordable, and replicable across diverse U.S. contexts. More than a design exercise, the competition aims to spark a conversation about how homes can support healthier, smarter, and more connected communities.

The total prize fund is $20,000 USD. The final registration deadline is May 20, 2026, and winners will be announced on September 22, 2026. The Next House: USA invites architects, students, and visionaries worldwide to redefine what the American home means today—and what it should mean tomorrow.
