The Monte D'Oiro Wine Tasting Room is located in the picturesque vineyards of Quinta do Monte d'Oiro in Portugal. Designed to enhance the experience of wine tasting, the structure is closely tied to its natural surroundings. The overall design concept focuses on how architecture can interact with the landscape, creating inviting spaces for visitors to engage with both the wine and the scenery.

Structure and Materials

The building features a steel frame that supports expansive glass panels, allowing natural light to flood the interior. This design promotes a strong connection to the landscape, letting visitors enjoy views of the vines outside. The roof, made of corten steel, is elevated on the frame to create airflow and help manage temperature within the space.

Interior Layout

Inside, the space is laid out for functionality and social interaction. A long, suspended wooden table serves as the main gathering point, encouraging people to come together. Movable benches add flexibility, making it easy to adjust seating for different group sizes. The utility core is discreetly placed to serve essential functions, such as storage and restroom facilities, ensuring they do not disrupt the overall design or visitor experience.

Natural Ventilation

Natural ventilation plays an important role in the design. Sliding glass partitions allow fresh air to circulate throughout the space while maintaining a visual connection to the outside. This design choice supports sustainable practices by providing comfort without relying heavily on mechanical systems.

Light and Shadow Dynamics

The project thoughtfully addresses light and shadow. The shape of the roof creates varying atmospheres as sunlight moves through the day. The textures and colors of the materials used further enhance these experiences, encouraging visitors to engage with the changing qualities of light within the tasting room.

Visitors enjoy the thoughtfully designed roof overhang, which provides shelter and creates a comfortable space to pause and take in the scenic views of the vineyard landscape.

MICROHOME 10: Celebrating Small-Scale Living with €100,000 Prize Fund and Kingspan’s Innovation

`
Competition organisers

The MICROHOME 10 competition invites participants to submit visionary designs for off-grid, modular microhomes that push the limits of sustainable, small-scale living. Organised by Buildner in partnership with Kingspan and Hapi Homes, this tenth edition sets the challenge of designing a dwelling for two people within a maximum floor area of 25 m², encouraging bold solutions adaptable to any urban or rural location. The competition continues Buildner’s mission to foster innovative approaches to compact, energy-efficient housing that can address pressing global challenges.

This year’s edition offers a generous total prize fund of €100,000, including the Kingspan Award for designs that integrate high-performance Kingspan products and the Hapi Homes Award for a project selected for real-world construction. In addition to cash prizes, the winners gain international exposure through Buildner’s media partnerships, publications, and a dedicated MICROHOME magazine, further amplifying their ideas to the wider architectural community.

Key dates for MICROHOME 10 include the closing date for registration on 25 September 2025, the submission deadline on 29 October 2025 (11:59 p.m. London time), and the announcement of winners on 9 December 2025. These milestones ensure participants have clear timelines to develop and present their concepts, with early registration discounts available to support students and emerging designers worldwide.
