Hellirinn is a greenhouse restaurant located in the Icelandic landscape, focusing on sustainability and environmental awareness. The structure has a sleek, rectangular shape that aligns with the rugged surroundings. Its design concept centers on creating a connection to the unique geographical features of Iceland, which is known for its dramatic contrasts between ice and fire.

Design Concept

The exterior features a jagged texture inspired by mugearite and benmoreite rocks from the western part of Iceland. This choice connects the building to the local geology and landscape. The design moves from transparent to opaque surfaces, allowing light to play across the building throughout the day. This approach enhances the visual experience and emphasizes the beauty of the natural environment.

Materiality

Corten is the main material used for the structure's exterior. This rust-colored steel is known for its durability in Iceland’s tough weather. It blends well with the landscape as it changes with the seasons. The warm hues of corten pay homage to the volcanic nature of the region, helping to create a distinct identity for the building that reflects its surroundings.

Spatial Experience

Visitors first step into the spacious greenhouse filled with vertical farming systems. This design promotes transparency in food production and strengthens the connection between diners and their meals. After the greenhouse, guests enter a multipurpose area that can host cultural events and community gatherings, making it a focal point for social interaction. The dining area has angular frames that lend it a cozy cave-like feeling, accommodating over 100 people in a setting inspired by Iceland’s crystal caves.

Connection to Landscape

Large windows throughout the building offer expansive views of the Mývatn nature baths and Hverfjall volcano. This connection with the landscape enhances the experience for diners and allows natural light to fill the space, creating a welcoming atmosphere, especially in winter months. Additionally, the structure includes over 1500 square meters of greenhouse space dedicated to producing local food. This element further emphasizes a commitment to sustainability and allows visitors to engage directly with the source of their meals.

Every design decision in Hellirinn adds to a narrative that respects both modern needs and natural context. The careful attention to materials and layout demonstrates how thoughtful architecture can resonate with the area it occupies.
