Corten Bridge Over Tectonic Divide Enhancing Geological Awareness

Project in-detail

Suspended above a tectonic break, a Corten bridge offers a unique vantage point for visitors to engage with Iceland's geological landscape, serving as both an observatory and a pathway for exploration.
5 key facts about this project
01
Corten materials are chosen for their ability to blend with the local geology and weather over time.
02
The bridge acts as both a physical connection and an observational platform over a tectonic break.
03
Visitors experience an immersive descent into the cave, engaging directly with the geological environment.
04
Pathways throughout the site are designed to encourage exploration and highlight specific geological features.
05
The project incorporates an information point to educate visitors about the local geological history and processes.

Bilanalina is located within Grjotagja's Cave in Iceland, a site known for its significant geological features, including the boundary between the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates. The project is designed to create a connection between the land and its visitors, fostering an experience that highlights the natural landscape and its geological history. The aim is to engage people in understanding the forces that shape the earth while offering a space for reflection and exploration.

Site Design and Functionality

The design includes key elements such as an information point, café, restrooms, viewpoints, and pathways that guide visitors through the cave and surrounding areas. This organized layout enhances interaction with the landscape, allowing visitors to immerse themselves in the geological context. Each area serves a purpose, facilitating an informative and enjoyable experience.

Bridge Tower and Observational Experience

A central feature is the bridge tower, which connects the two tectonic plates while serving as a viewing platform. This structure is intended to provide visitors with a space for contemplation. As people ascend, they gain a broader perspective of their surroundings. The highest point features a mesh platform that extends over the tectonic break, offering a direct observation point of the geological movements below.

Materiality and Environmental Integration

Corten is the main material used in this design, selected for its durability and its ability to blend with the rugged environment. The natural patina of weathering steel allows it to fit into the landscape while symbolizing the forces at work beneath the surface. Elements made from Corten rise from the ground, reinforcing the connection between visitors and the earth’s movements.

Pathways and Visitor Journey

A network of pathways leads visitors through diverse experiences, starting with a descent into the cave. This immersive journey encourages direct engagement with the geological phenomena of the site. As visitors ascend toward the café and resting areas, they are provided the opportunity to reflect on their surroundings and experiences.

At the peak of the bridge, the mesh platform allows for an unobstructed view of the tectonic break. From here, visitors can directly observe the geological processes that have shaped the landscape over time. This detail offers a clear connection between the structure and the dynamic environment, inviting contemplation of the earth's ongoing transformations.

`
Competition organisers

The MICROHOME 10 competition invites participants to submit visionary designs for off-grid, modular microhomes that push the limits of sustainable, small-scale living. Organised by Buildner in partnership with Kingspan and Hapi Homes, this tenth edition sets the challenge of designing a dwelling for two people within a maximum floor area of 25 m², encouraging bold solutions adaptable to any urban or rural location. The competition continues Buildner’s mission to foster innovative approaches to compact, energy-efficient housing that can address pressing global challenges.

This year’s edition offers a generous total prize fund of €100,000, including the Kingspan Award for designs that integrate high-performance Kingspan products and the Hapi Homes Award for a project selected for real-world construction. In addition to cash prizes, the winners gain international exposure through Buildner’s media partnerships, publications, and a dedicated MICROHOME magazine, further amplifying their ideas to the wider architectural community.

Key dates for MICROHOME 10 include the closing date for registration on 25 September 2025, the submission deadline on 29 October 2025 (11:59 p.m. London time), and the announcement of winners on 9 December 2025. These milestones ensure participants have clear timelines to develop and present their concepts, with early registration discounts available to support students and emerging designers worldwide.
