The Void is an architectural work that examines how buildings interact with the natural world. Situated in a minimalist style, the design features plain white walls that contribute to a feeling of openness and reflection. The concept highlights the play of natural light and shadow, creating moments of calm similar to the quiet of midnight. Designed as a space for contemplation, it serves purposes such as meditation, reading, and enjoying the outdoors in privacy.

Architecture Concept

A key feature of the design is a mini courtyard that provides natural light and ventilation. This outdoor space blurs the line between inside and outside, allowing a quiet connection with nature. The courtyard encourages various activities, from meditation to leisurely showers. It creates an intimate setting where one can interact with the landscape and experience solitude.

Modular Cabin Design

The central cabin is based on a standard 20-foot shipping container. This choice supports flexibility and mobility, allowing the cabin to be moved to different locations according to user needs. A sliding unit mechanism enhances the adaptability of the space, making it easy to adjust and engage with the surroundings. The design invites occupants to shape their personal environments.

Material Considerations

Insulated corrugated claddings are used in the construction, playing a significant role in the cabin's thermal efficiency. This material choice aligns with the aim to create a structure that is both sustainable and practical. The claddings contribute to the overall look of the cabin, reinforcing its connection to the landscape.

Architectural details, such as carefully positioned windows, frame views of the outdoors and create a thoughtful interaction with the environment. These features help foster a setting that promotes reflection and mindfulness, allowing occupants to engage with nature in a meaningful way.

Competition organisers

The MICROHOME 10 competition invites participants to submit visionary designs for off-grid, modular microhomes that push the limits of sustainable, small-scale living. Organised by Buildner in partnership with Kingspan and Hapi Homes, this tenth edition sets the challenge of designing a dwelling for two people within a maximum floor area of 25 m², encouraging bold solutions adaptable to any urban or rural location. The competition continues Buildner’s mission to foster innovative approaches to compact, energy-efficient housing that can address pressing global challenges.

This year’s edition offers a generous total prize fund of €100,000, including the Kingspan Award for designs that integrate high-performance Kingspan products and the Hapi Homes Award for a project selected for real-world construction. In addition to cash prizes, the winners gain international exposure through Buildner’s media partnerships, publications, and a dedicated MICROHOME magazine, further amplifying their ideas to the wider architectural community.

Key dates for MICROHOME 10 include the closing date for registration on 25 September 2025, the submission deadline on 29 October 2025 (11:59 p.m. London time), and the announcement of winners on 9 December 2025.
