Cork Tiles and Gabion Walls in a Forest Retreat for Mindfulness

Project in-detail

Composed of cork tiles and gabion walls, the retreat harmonizes with its forest surroundings, providing a tranquil space dedicated to yoga and mindfulness practice.
5 key facts about this project
01
Cork tiles are used for their acoustic properties and sustainability.
02
Gabion walls merge with the natural landscape for optimal stability.
03
The layout incorporates a central courtyard for communal activities.
04
Large windows provide expansive views of the surrounding forest.
05
Rainwater collection systems are integrated into the building's design.

The yoga retreat located in Vale de Moses, Portugal, offers a place for physical and mental renewal. Set in a forest, the design emphasizes a connection to nature, guiding participants on their journey toward inner calm. A wooden path begins at the entrance, blending with the forest trail and symbolizing the transition from the outside world to a space of reflection.

Architecture and Spatial Arrangement

Two main structures comprise the retreat: the yoga house and the bathing facilities. They are placed thoughtfully within the sloping landscape. This layout enhances the connection to the natural terrain and promotes a sense of privacy. The distance between the yoga house and the baths creates a central courtyard, which encourages group activities and provides a space for outdoor gatherings and yoga practice.

Engagement with Nature

The design pays attention to the senses. The buildings and courtyard are created to involve sight, sound, smell, touch, and taste. Participants are encouraged to be aware of their surroundings fully, enhancing their experience. The central courtyard serves as an essential area, promoting interactions with nature while allowing for personal contemplation.

Sustainable Practices and Materials

Sustainability is prioritized throughout the retreat. Local materials are used to reduce environmental impact. The project features cork tiles, gabion walls, pine siding, and terracotta tiles. These materials connect the buildings to traditional Portuguese practices while ensuring a cohesive appearance that resonates with the landscape.

Architectural Form

The design takes cues from local architectural styles and adapts traditional forms in a contemporary manner. The back walls of the buildings follow the shape of the mountain, creating a unified look that honors the surrounding environment. This careful integration helps maintain the character of the area and solidifies the retreat’s peaceful atmosphere.

Large windows frame views of the forest, allowing natural light to fill the interior spaces while preserving the connection to the outdoors. This design choice enhances the sense of tranquility and openness, creating a welcoming environment for all who visit.
