The Solid Cork Shala stands in the landscape of Portugal, where the local surroundings influence its design and purpose. Functioning as a space for yoga and reflection, it highlights the qualities of cork as a material significant to Portuguese culture. The overall concept focuses on simplicity and ecological responsibility, using cork not just as a construction element but as a defining characteristic of the structure.

Materiality and Sustainability
Cork is the main material, valued for its sustainable features. Its natural properties include being waterproof, insulating, and capable of bearing weight. This allows for the possibility of reducing reliance on multiple materials, leading to a lower environmental impact. Utilizing cork highlights an approach to construction that promotes energy efficiency and supports the idea of building responsibly.

Structural Expression
The design of the Solid Cork Shala is characterized by solid forms that convey both strength and a tactile presence. The structure incorporates large walls with small, deep openings, reflecting a traditional way of working with materials. This choice creates a connection to local building practices while offering a modern take on space and volume. The resulting design creates engaging interiors with a clear sense of place.

Aesthetic Philosophy
Inspired by Shibumi, the aesthetics of the Shala focus on simple beauty and natural qualities. Every design element is selected to foster a calm and pleasing environment. This attention to detail creates an atmosphere that encourages quiet contemplation and mindfulness. By integrating light, space, and form thoughtfully, the design invites users to experience a harmonious relationship with their surroundings.

Connection to Nature
Large windows play a key role in enhancing the bond between the interior space and the natural environment. Positioned at a height suitable for yoga practice, these windows bring in abundant natural light. This feature creates a dynamic and shifting ambiance throughout the day. The design eliminates thermal bridges through innovative glazing, which allows for a smooth transition between inside and outside while promoting a natural interaction with the landscape.

The low-placed windows, identified as "Yoga height," enrich user experiences and reinforce the commitment to encourage mindfulness and engagement with nature, seamlessly blending practical use and the calming characteristics of the material and setting.
