5 key facts about this project
The Monte D'Oiro wine tasting room is located in the scenic landscape of southwest Portugal, an area known for its rich cork oak forests. As a space dedicated to wine tasting and appreciation, the building reflects a design concept deeply inspired by the bark of the cork oak. The architectural approach focuses on combining natural shapes with sustainable practices, creating a welcoming environment for visitors to enjoy the wines of the region.
Architectural Inspiration
The overall design draws from the appearance of cork oak bark, leading to walls featuring tilts and rounded forms that resemble the textures found in nature. This focus on organic shapes strengthens the building's connection to its surroundings. The layout encourages exploration and interaction, with spaces designed for both small gatherings and larger groups.
Material Selection
The exterior walls are constructed with planks that have undergone the Shou Sugi Ban treatment. This method enhances the wood's durability through a process of carbonization and adds a distinct visual texture to the façade. Inside, cork lines the walls, providing good sound absorption and promoting environmental responsibility. As cork trees can regrow their bark without harm, this material choice reflects a commitment to sustainability.
Interior Experience
Inside the tasting room, natural materials create a comforting atmosphere. The cork-covered walls and oak flooring enhance the sensory experience, encouraging visitors to engage with their surroundings. Thoughtfully placed windows frame views of the cork oak landscape outside, visually connecting the interior with the natural environment.
The design features the gentle curvature of the walls, leading to an inviting entrance and creating a space that feels both open and intimate. This careful attention to detail enhances the enjoyment of wine tasting while fostering a sense of place within the local scenery.
