The Vale de Moses Yoga House is located near the Rio Zezere in Portugal, surrounded by forested hills and open views of the valley. It is designed to promote relaxation and mindfulness, reflecting a focus on simplicity and clarity. The building aligns with the natural contours of the site, allowing it to complement the landscape while providing an optimal environment for yoga practice.

Site Orientation and Form

The structure is positioned on a slope, with its form dictated by the land's direction. The rectangular shape fits naturally into the setting, ensuring minimal disruption to the environment. Large glass walls invite in light and create a strong connection to the outdoors, allowing users to appreciate the surrounding scenery while practicing.

Spatial Organization

Inside, the layout leads visitors from an inviting entrance to the main yoga studio. This entrance area encourages interaction and features seating along with a small kitchen. Nearby, a transition space effectively stores yoga mats and accessories, linking communal and private areas without interrupting the flow.

Interior and Materiality

The yoga studio, oriented toward the west, offers views of the sunset. Designed to be minimalistic, the interior features essential elements that support the practice of yoga by reducing distractions. The structural materials include brick for insulation and support, a timber frame that allows for expansive glass openings, and a white plaster finish on the walls. Cork insulation in the roof enhances energy efficiency and contributes to sustainable design.

Connection to Nature

Outdoor elements are thoughtfully incorporated, including terraces and a Zen garden that provide spaces for reflection and personal practice. The terraced layout encourages engagement with nature, enhancing the overall user experience. Sliding glass doors create a direct connection from the studio to the terrace, blurring the line between indoors and outdoors and reinforcing the relationship with the landscape.

The Vale de Moses Yoga House represents a commitment to functionality and harmony with its environment. This careful design fosters a sense of peace, supporting the essence of yoga practice.
