The POMBALINE CAGE 2.0 project presents a one-space cabin that fuses modern design with elements of traditional Portuguese architecture. Located in a natural setting, the cabin serves as a place for personal reflection, meditation, and engagement with the outdoors. The design focuses on flexibility and a strong connection to the surrounding environment, creating a space that encourages interaction with nature while offering comfort and security.

Flexibility of Space

A key element of the POMBALINE CAGE 2.0 is its movable walls. These allow for different configurations, enabling users to adapt the space to their needs. The cabin can shift from an enclosed setting for quiet contemplation to an open terrace that welcomes views and fresh air. This adaptability enhances how users engage with both the interior and the exterior, making the cabin versatile for various activities.

Core Functionalities

The cabin features a central technical core that includes essential services for daily living. This core contains systems for ventilation, a water tank, a sink, and a fireplace, all designed for efficient space use. An essential oil diffuser is incorporated, promoting a pleasant environment by dispersing aromas throughout the cabin. This thoughtful design divides the interior into two main zones: a larger area for relaxation and meditation, and a smaller area for storage and utility.

Materiality and Cultural Context

Construction utilizes the Pombaline cage method, a traditional technique that provides strength and stability to the building. This approach not only enhances the structure's durability but also ties it to its cultural roots. Additionally, cork is used as a material, chosen for its thermal insulation properties. This choice emphasizes sustainability and reflects the local context, minimizing the environmental impact of the building.

The cabin encourages individual customization, allowing users to adjust factors such as light and sound to create their preferred atmosphere. This blend of modern amenities and traditional design provides a well-rounded response to contemporary needs. Large windows frame the surrounding views, fostering a sense of connection between the inside and outside, enhancing the overall experience of the space. The cabin invites occupants to immerse themselves in nature while offering a comfortable retreat.

The Next House: USA — A Global Call to Reimagine the American Suburb

`
Competition organisers

Buildner is launching The Next House: USA, a global architecture competition that challenges architects, designers, and thinkers to reimagine the American suburban home for the 21st century. For decades, the suburban house has symbolized comfort and stability, but today it often reflects excess, isolation, and environmental strain. This competition asks: how can the American home evolve to address climate urgency, economic pressures, and shifting social values?

Participants are tasked with designing a prototype home of no more than 1,500 sq ft (≈140 m²) for a household of two adults and one child. The design should be compact yet generous, adaptable, sustainable, affordable, and replicable across diverse U.S. contexts. More than a design exercise, the competition aims to spark a conversation about how homes can support healthier, smarter, and more connected communities.

The total prize fund is $20,000 USD. The final registration deadline is May 20, 2026, and winners will be announced on September 22, 2026. The Next House: USA invites architects, students, and visionaries worldwide to redefine what the American home means today—and what it should mean tomorrow.
