The Adho Mukha Yoga House is designed as an "Islet of Zen," located in a quiet and natural setting that encourages relaxation and reflection. It features a central Zen garden, surrounded by spaces for meditation and wellness activities. The design concept focuses on creating a balance between the built areas and the landscape, using an organic form that enhances functionality and visual interest.

Concept and Layout

At the core of the design is the Zen garden, which embodies tranquility and mindfulness. The layout is inspired by monastic architecture, with an emphasis on privacy and connection to nature. The yoga room is carefully located at a "corner of cliff," taking advantage of scenic mountain views and abundant natural light, making it a pleasant space for practice and meditation.

Material Selection

The choice of materials plays a significant role in the design. Wood and oriented strand board (OSB) panels are used for structural support while keeping the overall weight of the building manageable. Soil plaster on the walls and ceilings gives an appealing finish and enhances the building's environmental performance. For flooring, cork has been chosen due to its comfort and durability, especially suited for yoga activities.

Sustainability and Climate Control

Sustainability is a key focus of the Adho Mukha Yoga House. It features advanced water management systems that separate rainwater and gray water for various uses. The use of natural vegetation for filtration supports the overall ecological goals of the design. A solar chimney is included to promote natural ventilation and climate control, which helps to reduce energy consumption in the building.

Interior Experience

Inside the house, spaces flow together while remaining oriented toward the garden. Each room has visual access to the central Zen garden, reinforcing a sense of connection with nature. The design encourages users to engage in activities like yoga and meditation in a calm setting. Organic shapes and light materials create a welcoming environment, inviting occupants to find a sense of balance and well-being.
