Cork-Finished Retreat Featuring Sustainable Maritime Pine and Biogas Systems

Project in-detail

Constructed with maritime pine and incorporating biogas systems, the retreat emphasizes sustainability through rainwater harvesting and an elevated design that merges with its steep natural landscape, creating a space for reflection and relaxation.
5 key facts about this project
01
Constructed on a steep slope, preserving existing vegetation for ecological harmony.
02
Utilizes a biogas composting toilet, transforming waste into usable energy.
03
Features rainwater harvesting with two 800-liter storage tanks for water efficiency.
04
Large south-facing windows optimize passive solar heating throughout the year.
05
Elevated foundation allows for natural airflow and protects local flora and fauna.

Casa Pinus Pinaster is located in Vale de Moses, a site dominated by maritime pine. Designed as a retreat, it blends with its surroundings while providing a functional space for living. The concept revolves around a deep connection to nature, using local materials to lessen environmental impact. This approach creates a relaxing environment for occupants.

Design and Spatial Organization

Two separate volumes connect through a central deck, allowing for a continuous flow between indoor and outdoor areas. The deck serves multiple purposes, including yoga and relaxation, while the two living units offer privacy when required. A protective shell covers the deck, providing comfort from the weather and helping establish a tranquil atmosphere.

Sustainability Measures

The design incorporates rainwater harvesting, utilizing the roof to collect water into two 800-liter tanks. This system ensures a reliable water supply during dry periods, demonstrating effective resource management. A biogas composting toilet further enhances sustainability by turning waste into biogas for heating and compost for plants, supporting self-sufficiency and minimizing environmental effects.

Adaptability and Seasonal Use

The design allows for seasonal changes in use. During warmer months, the deck promotes outdoor activities, while sleeping areas can be closed off at night for privacy. A fireplace in the communal area extends the deck's use into cooler evenings. In winter, wall elements can be adjusted to change the deck into an indoor space, benefiting from passive heating provided by a central wood stove.

Natural Light and Materiality

Large windows enhance views and utilize natural light throughout the building. The south-facing openings collect passive solar energy, warming the interior in colder months, while overhangs help keep it cool when the weather is warmer. Specific materials mentioned include maritime pine shingles, expanded insulation corkboard, maritime pine plywood, maritime pine joists, maritime pine planks, and cork wall finishes. These choices support the design's connection to the local environment and align with its sustainability goals.

The careful placement of Casa Pinus Pinaster on the slope allows for the preservation of existing vegetation. This design illustrates a commitment to environmental sensitivity and a desire to work harmoniously with nature.

MICROHOME 10: Celebrating Small-Scale Living with €100,000 Prize Fund and Kingspan’s Innovation

`
Competition organisers

The MICROHOME 10 competition invites participants to submit visionary designs for off-grid, modular microhomes that push the limits of sustainable, small-scale living. Organised by Buildner in partnership with Kingspan and Hapi Homes, this tenth edition sets the challenge of designing a dwelling for two people within a maximum floor area of 25 m², encouraging bold solutions adaptable to any urban or rural location. The competition continues Buildner’s mission to foster innovative approaches to compact, energy-efficient housing that can address pressing global challenges.

This year’s edition offers a generous total prize fund of €100,000, including the Kingspan Award for designs that integrate high-performance Kingspan products and the Hapi Homes Award for a project selected for real-world construction. In addition to cash prizes, the winners gain international exposure through Buildner’s media partnerships, publications, and a dedicated MICROHOME magazine, further amplifying their ideas to the wider architectural community.

Key dates for MICROHOME 10 include the closing date for registration on 25 September 2025, the submission deadline on 29 October 2025 (11:59 p.m. London time), and the announcement of winners on 9 December 2025. These milestones ensure participants have clear timelines to develop and present their concepts, with early registration discounts available to support students and emerging designers worldwide.
