Cork Cladding and Natural Stone Embrace in a Serene Yoga Retreat

Project in-detail

Cork cladding and locally sourced stone define a yoga retreat that harmonizes with its natural surroundings, emphasizing permeability and flexibility throughout the space.
5 key facts about this project
01
Cork cladding enhances acoustics and thermal comfort while connecting to local craftsmanship.
02
The pitched roof design facilitates ventilation and natural light throughout the space.
03
Openings on both sides provide expansive views of the surrounding landscape.
04
A Zen garden complements the interior, enriching the user experience with nature.
05
Flexible elevations adapt to seasonal changes and user needs for varied activities.

The Calm Shala is situated in Vale de Moses, a peaceful location that serves as a dedicated space for yoga. Inspired by the Savasana pose, the design focuses on the relationship between the structure and its natural surroundings. The overall concept emphasizes simplicity and practicality, allowing the building to blend with the hilly landscape while minimizing impact on the environment.

Spatial Composition

The Shala features a pitched roof that reflects the forms found in nature, creating a connection with the surrounding hills. By choosing a flat area for the structure, the design reduces disruption to the landscape. The layout is flexible, with openings that can adjust based on the time of day or season, allowing for various uses throughout the year. This flexibility supports a range of activities and experiences within the space.

Material Selection

For the exterior walls, locally sourced stone is used, linking the building to its natural context and helping to regulate temperature. Concrete is chosen for its durability, providing strength that accommodates the changing needs of users. Cork is included in the ceiling, highlighting local craftsmanship while also enriching the sensory experience and improving sound quality within the Shala.

Light and Environment

Light plays a significant role in the design, with silk roller blinds drawing inspiration from Japanese folding screens. These blinds not only filter sunlight but also create textured shadows that shift throughout the day. This design decision helps to create a calm atmosphere, encouraging practitioners to engage deeply in their practice while connecting with the rhythm of nature.

Outdoor Engagement

The project incorporates outdoor spaces, including a garden and a tea area, designed for relaxation and reflection. These areas enhance the overall experience by allowing users to engage with nature while enjoying scenic views. This connection to the environment is an essential aspect of the Shala, fostering a sense of peace and well-being.

Attention to detail is evident throughout the design, from the choice of materials to the thoughtful arrangement of spaces, creating a tranquil atmosphere for yoga practitioners in the serene Vale de Moses.
