With its unique cork façade and foundation supported by ground screws, the design creates a harmonious yoga retreat that emphasizes sustainability and a deep connection to the surrounding pine forest.
5 key facts about this project
01
The building is completely clad in Portuguese cork, enhancing thermal insulation and tactile experience.
02
Ground screws are used for foundation, reducing land disturbance and environmental impact.
03
Extensive use of cross-laminated timber contributes to structural integrity while maintaining a warm aesthetic.
04
Water is sourced from a borehole, with grey water managed for irrigation, promoting resource efficiency.
05
The design features large openings that connect yoga spaces directly to the forest, fostering a natural atmosphere.

Situated in a quiet pine forest, Jardim Coberto serves as a yoga house designed to create a close connection with nature. The space is intended for yoga practitioners seeking tranquility and reflection. Its clear design concept centers on opening up the building to the outside world, encouraging users to feel the presence of the surrounding environment while they practice and relax.

Design Concept

The design emphasizes the relationship between the built environment and the natural landscape. By blending interior and exterior spaces, the layout invites people to experience nature firsthand. This thoughtful organization allows for smooth transitions between different functional areas, encouraging both individual reflection and communal gathering. The layout seeks to enhance well-being by deepening the connection between users and their surroundings.

Materiality

Materials are an important aspect of Jardim Coberto. The use of Portuguese cork wraps the building inside and out, creating a tactile relationship with nature and providing effective insulation. The cork’s warm colors and texture align with the forest environment. Wood is also a key material, with the structure made from cross-laminated timber (CLT), which highlights the commitment to sustainability and ecological design.

Sustainability Features

Sustainable practices are integral to the design. Ground screws serve as the foundation, minimizing ground disturbance while ensuring stability. Energy needs are met with a photovoltaic solar panel system that enables the building to produce its own power. A borehole supplies drinking water, with grey water being redirected for garden irrigation. This thorough approach to water and energy management reflects an effort to minimize environmental impact.

Spatial Experience

Each functional area is designed carefully to maximize natural light and foster a calm atmosphere. The yoga spaces feature large openings that connect directly to the forest, allowing practitioners to feel part of nature. This thoughtful design promotes well-being and introspection. By blending indoor and outdoor environments, Jardim Coberto encourages a profound interaction with the landscape that surrounds it.

With careful attention to detail, such as the incorporation of greenery along the building’s sides, Jardim Coberto illustrates the principles of practical and environmentally sensitive design.

`
Competition organisers

The MICROHOME 10 competition invites participants to submit visionary designs for off-grid, modular microhomes that push the limits of sustainable, small-scale living. Organised by Buildner in partnership with Kingspan and Hapi Homes, this tenth edition sets the challenge of designing a dwelling for two people within a maximum floor area of 25 m², encouraging bold solutions adaptable to any urban or rural location. The competition continues Buildner’s mission to foster innovative approaches to compact, energy-efficient housing that can address pressing global challenges.

This year’s edition offers a generous total prize fund of €100,000, including the Kingspan Award for designs that integrate high-performance Kingspan products and the Hapi Homes Award for a project selected for real-world construction. In addition to cash prizes, the winners gain international exposure through Buildner’s media partnerships, publications, and a dedicated MICROHOME magazine, further amplifying their ideas to the wider architectural community.

Key dates for MICROHOME 10 include the closing date for registration on 25 September 2025, the submission deadline on 29 October 2025 (11:59 p.m. London time), and the announcement of winners on 9 December 2025. These milestones ensure participants have clear timelines to develop and present their concepts, with early registration discounts available to support students and emerging designers worldwide.
