The Samādhi Pod project combines meditation with thoughtful design, located in the peaceful Vale de Moses. The pod serves as a space for contemplation, drawing on ideas from the second chapter of the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali, which emphasize unity and a connection to nature. The design aims to provide an immersive experience, helping occupants engage deeply with their surroundings while practicing mindfulness.

Materials and Structure

Construction is based on low-tech principles, using locally sourced materials to reduce environmental impact. The structural framework is made of pine timber studs, chosen for their strength and lightweight qualities. This choice allows for an efficient construction process while maintaining aesthetic value. The exterior features cork oak sheeting, which functions as both insulation and cladding, enhancing the pod's energy efficiency.

Design and Spatial Experience

Each pod measures 6.40 meters in length, with widths ranging from 5.00 to 2.30 meters, resulting in a trapezoidal shape that optimizes internal space. The arrangement of the pods across the sloped terrain is intentional, providing various views and experiences of the landscape. This layout fosters a connection between the occupants and their natural surroundings, encouraging a deeper engagement with meditation practices.

Environmental Considerations

Water management is crucial in the design, incorporating an elevated rainwater tank for sanitary use and systems for collecting greywater. The structure is designed to allow rainwater runoff underneath, which helps maintain the natural hydrology of the site. This attention to environmental factors reflects a comprehensive approach to sustainable design.

Thermal and Environmental Comfort

Thermal comfort is achieved through natural ventilation, with openings at both ends of the pod allowing air to flow freely. Careful orientation maximizes sunlight exposure throughout the day, enhancing comfort without the need for mechanical heating or cooling. This focus on natural environmental performance contributes to a calm atmosphere, supporting effective meditation.

The design thoughtfully connects structure and nature, encouraging a retreat into personal reflection while harmonizing with the surrounding landscape. Light, form, and material work together to create a peaceful setting that promotes introspection and mindfulness.

The Buildner’s Unbuilt Award 2025: Celebrating Architectural Creativity and Visionary Unbuilt Designs with a Total Prize Fund of €100,000

`
Competition organisers

The Buildner’s Unbuilt Award 2025 is an international architecture competition dedicated to recognizing and celebrating the value of unrealized architectural designs. It invites architects, designers, and students worldwide to submit visionary projects that have not yet been constructed, highlighting the power of ideas and the creativity behind the design process. By focusing on unbuilt work, the competition aims to bring forward concepts that shape the future of architecture and push the boundaries of the profession.

Participants can compete in three categories based on project scale: Small Wonders (up to 100 m²), Medium Marvels (101–999 m²), and Large Visions (over 1,000 m²). Each category winner will receive €20,000, and additional prizes include honorable mentions, student awards, and a special Best Presentation Award. Winning projects will gain significant international exposure through Buildner’s publicity campaign and a feature article on ArchDaily, providing a unique opportunity to showcase creative ideas to a global audience.

The Buildner’s Unbuilt Award 2025 encourages entrants to submit any type of unbuilt project, from conceptual visions to detailed designs, celebrating bold innovation without the constraints of realization. Important deadlines: registration closes on October 30, 2025; submissions are due by November 20, 2025; winners will be announced on December 17, 2025.
