Copper Roof Pavilion Emphasizing Local Xisto and Terracotta for Retreat Wellness

Project in-detail

Utilizing a copper roof that harmonizes with local Xisto and terracotta, the design creates a multi-use cabin that fosters wellness and reflection in the natural landscape of Portugal.

The cabin's roof features custom copper gutters designed for efficient rainwater collection.
02
Local Xisto stone is used for its thermal stability and durability in varying climates.

04
Terracotta tiles are selected to blend seamlessly with the local landscape.
05
The design incorporates expansive openings to maximize natural light throughout the interior.

The Meditation Cabin at Vale de Moses is located in the peaceful landscape of Amieira, Portugal. This project focuses on promoting relaxation and personal growth. Serving as both a therapy space and minimalist living quarters, it emphasizes simplicity while creating a meaningful connection with nature. The design reflects local traditions and incorporates sustainable practices, aligning with the retreat’s mission of wellness and renewal.

Design Concept

The layout is organized to allow flexibility, accommodating the varying needs of guests. The cabin functions as an open-air space that supports both community engagement and individual reflection. Each area is designed to encourage interaction while providing privacy where necessary. This balance helps create an experience that is both restorative and enriching.

Materials and Sustainability

This project uses materials that are contextually relevant and environmentally friendly. Xisto, a locally sourced stone, is used for its insulating properties, helping to keep the cabin comfortable year-round. Local timber adds warmth and a natural feel, while terracotta roofing tiles bring traditional charm to the structure. These materials work together to blend the cabin seamlessly into its surroundings.

Environmental Considerations

A notable aspect of the design is its focus on water management. Copper gutters channel rainwater into a cistern, which is then used for irrigation, promoting sustainability. The cabin features overhangs that provide shade and help regulate indoor temperatures, contributing to energy efficiency and comfort throughout different seasons.

Architectural Details

Generous windows allow natural light to fill the interior space, connecting occupants with the beautiful landscape outside. The design also includes custom wrought iron railings inspired by local traditions, adding a unique visual touch. Such details enhance the project’s character while maintaining a strong connection to its cultural context.
