5 key facts about this project
01
The observation tower features copper panels engraved with runic writing.
02
The visitor center is constructed primarily from durable iron.
03
Both structures are intentionally tilted to symbolize geological forces.
04
The design emphasizes visitor safety with controlled entry to the caves.
05
The location enhances the connection between architecture and Iceland's geothermal landscape.

The Iceland Cave Tower project offers a thoughtful integration of narrative and exploration, drawing inspiration from Jules Verne's "Journey to the Center of the Earth." Set between Europe and America, it consists of two key structures designed to enhance the visitor experience. The visitor center serves as the starting point for exploring the area's geothermal features, while the observation tower provides an elevated viewpoint of the remarkable landscape.

Visitor Center

The visitor center acts as the main entry point for visitors, focusing on education and orientation. This structure is designed to be welcoming, allowing individuals to gather information before venturing into the caves. Inside, visitors can learn about the geothermal pools and unique geological formations that define the region.

Observation Tower

The observation tower is located across from the caves, offering a stunning perspective of the surrounding landscape. Its design aligns with the theme of exploration, allowing visitors to see the environment from an elevated position. The tower's distinct tilt serves as a visual metaphor for the geological forces shaping the Earth, reinforcing the connection between architecture, nature, and narrative.

Materials

The materials used include iron and copper. The visitor center primarily features iron, which provides strength and durability. This choice reflects the robust character of the landscape. In contrast, the observation tower incorporates copper, contributing to its aesthetic. The copper panels feature runic writing, linking the design to Icelandic culture and adding depth to the storytelling aspect.

Structural Integrity and Symbolism

Both structures are deliberately angled to represent tectonic movements in the Earth's crust. This design decision emphasizes the dynamic nature of the landscape. Additionally, the placement of the entry towers serves as a safety measure, ensuring visitors approach the caves in a secure manner. This practical consideration complements the engaging experience of exploring the fascinating setting.

The observation tower stands out with its detailed copper work, inviting visitors to connect with the natural and cultural narratives of the Icelandic landscape. The design is not just about the structures themselves; it is about the journey and discovery that unfold within this remarkable environment.

`
Competition organisers

The Buildner’s Unbuilt Award 2025 is an international architecture competition dedicated to recognizing and celebrating the value of unrealized architectural designs. It invites architects, designers, and students worldwide to submit visionary projects that have not yet been constructed, highlighting the power of ideas and the creativity behind the design process. By focusing on unbuilt work, the competition aims to bring forward concepts that shape the future of architecture and push the boundaries of the profession.

Participants can compete in three categories based on project scale: Small Wonders (up to 100 m²), Medium Marvels (101–999 m²), and Large Visions (over 1,000 m²). Each category winner will receive €20,000, and additional prizes include honorable mentions, student awards, and a special Best Presentation Award. Winning projects will gain significant international exposure through Buildner’s publicity campaign and a feature article on ArchDaily, providing a unique opportunity to showcase creative ideas to a global audience.

The Buildner’s Unbuilt Award 2025 encourages entrants to submit any type of unbuilt project, from conceptual visions to detailed designs, celebrating bold innovation without the constraints of realization. Important deadlines: registration closes on October 30, 2025; submissions are due by November 20, 2025; winners will be announced on December 17, 2025.
