The Tengja Grjótajgá Cave Tower is located at the crevice between the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates near Lake Mývatn in Iceland. Its design centers around the idea of "Tengja," which means "connecting" in Icelandic. The tower functions not only as an observation point, providing excellent views of the surrounding landscape, but also as an educational center that helps visitors understand the geologic significance of the site.

Design Concept

The main goal of the Tengja Cave Tower is to bridge the gap between the two tectonic plates. The horizontal observation space allows for a complete 360-degree view, helping visitors appreciate the vast geological features. The bridge that connects the plates serves as a symbol of unity, encouraging exploration and giving users a chance to navigate a space shaped by natural forces.

Visitor Amenities

The tower is strategically placed between Karlagjá Cave and Kvennagjá Cave, ensuring convenient access for those exploring the area. The entrance aligns with the tourist cave, while bathing facilities are readily available with restrooms — four of which include showers. This design consideration supports Icelandic bathing culture and enhances comfort for all visitors.

Educational Experience

The pathway within the Tengja Cave Tower guides visitors upward from the Eurasian Plate. Along the way, informative displays explain tectonic movements and volcanic activity. This educational focus enriches visitor engagement, allowing a deeper understanding of Iceland's unique geology. It creates an interactive experience that connects users to both the landscape and its history.

Architectural Integration

The structure also takes into account the ongoing geological actions between the tectonic plates. The bridge is built to adapt to these changes as they occur. By incorporating this flexibility, visitors are reminded of the constant changes in the environment. This relationship between architecture and nature highlights how human-made spaces can coexist with the natural world.

The tower concludes with a café situated on the North American Plate. This space offers a place for visitors to relax and take in the surrounding views. The café provides a moment of pause, enhancing the overall experience while allowing individuals to appreciate the impressive geological features of the site.

`
Competition organisers

The Buildner’s Unbuilt Award 2025 is an international architecture competition dedicated to recognizing and celebrating the value of unrealized architectural designs. It invites architects, designers, and students worldwide to submit visionary projects that have not yet been constructed, highlighting the power of ideas and the creativity behind the design process. By focusing on unbuilt work, the competition aims to bring forward concepts that shape the future of architecture and push the boundaries of the profession.

Participants can compete in three categories based on project scale: Small Wonders (up to 100 m²), Medium Marvels (101–999 m²), and Large Visions (over 1,000 m²). Each category winner will receive €20,000, and additional prizes include honorable mentions, student awards, and a special Best Presentation Award. Winning projects will gain significant international exposure through Buildner’s publicity campaign and a feature article on ArchDaily, providing a unique opportunity to showcase creative ideas to a global audience.

The Buildner’s Unbuilt Award 2025 encourages entrants to submit any type of unbuilt project, from conceptual visions to detailed designs, celebrating bold innovation without the constraints of realization. Important deadlines: registration closes on October 30, 2025; submissions are due by November 20, 2025; winners will be announced on December 17, 2025.
