The Icelandic Greenhouse Restaurant, also known as "The Northern Lantern," combines a culinary experience with local agriculture, situated within Iceland’s remarkable natural landscape. The design prioritizes transparency and accessibility, featuring a glazed facade that reflects the environment during the day and glows softly at night. The restaurant serves both as a place to dine and as an educational space where guests can engage with the process of growing food in Iceland's unique climate.

Design Concept

The concept focuses on creating a strong connection between the interior spaces and the outdoors. The fully glazed facade not only welcomes daylight but also showcases the activities happening inside. This approach promotes a sense of openness, allowing visitors to observe the relationship between food production and culinary art.

Site Layout

Movement across the site is facilitated by two winding pedestrian paths. One path leads from the parking area on the North side to the main entrance, while the other directs guests toward the Mývatn Nature Baths. This thoughtful arrangement enhances accessibility and encourages exploration. A stone garden lies between the paths, offering a tranquil outdoor area for relaxation and contemplation.

Functional Areas

The layout is divided into four main zones: public, private, semi-public, and semi-private. The ground floor includes 1,464 square meters mainly used for public activities. This level features a spacious café alongside a grand spiral staircase, which acts as an important design element. On the first floor, there are an additional 1,504 square meters that include planting areas, different kitchen spaces, and pathways, allowing guests to experience the link between growing food and enjoying meals.

Design Details

On the top floor, measuring 416 square meters, a dining area offers guests clear views of the surrounding landscape through its glass walls. This design detail highlights the connection between the food served and its environment, enhancing the overall dining experience. The Northern Lantern reflects a commitment to sustainability by fostering an awareness of agricultural practices within a setting that invites interaction with nature.

The Buildner’s Unbuilt Award 2025: Celebrating Architectural Creativity and Visionary Unbuilt Designs with a Total Prize Fund of €100,000

`
Competition organisers

The Buildner’s Unbuilt Award 2025 is an international architecture competition dedicated to recognizing and celebrating the value of unrealized architectural designs. It invites architects, designers, and students worldwide to submit visionary projects that have not yet been constructed, highlighting the power of ideas and the creativity behind the design process. By focusing on unbuilt work, the competition aims to bring forward concepts that shape the future of architecture and push the boundaries of the profession.

Participants can compete in three categories based on project scale: Small Wonders (up to 100 m²), Medium Marvels (101–999 m²), and Large Visions (over 1,000 m²). Each category winner will receive €20,000, and additional prizes include honorable mentions, student awards, and a special Best Presentation Award. Winning projects will gain significant international exposure through Buildner’s publicity campaign and a feature article on ArchDaily, providing a unique opportunity to showcase creative ideas to a global audience.

The Buildner’s Unbuilt Award 2025 encourages entrants to submit any type of unbuilt project, from conceptual visions to detailed designs, celebrating bold innovation without the constraints of realization. Important deadlines: registration closes on October 30, 2025; submissions are due by November 20, 2025; winners will be announced on December 17, 2025.
