Set in the countryside of Latvia, the project at Ozolini farm focuses on creating a peaceful setting for meditation and relaxation. The aim is to help guests disconnect from everyday life and engage in silent reflection. The design draws from the natural surroundings, emphasizing a connection between the buildings and the lush forest.

Design Concept

The main idea behind the design is to create spaces that support quiet contemplation. The buildings take on conic shapes, inspired by the tall pine trees found in the area. This choice allows the structures to blend into the forest environment while providing an inviting space for guests. The layout is organized in a circular fashion, optimizing space for comfort and simplicity, which is ideal for short stays.

Spatial Organization

A living pod serves as the primary accommodation, featuring an open floor plan. Inside, guests find essential amenities such as a small kitchen and relaxation area. Space-saving elements, like a suspended bed, help maximize room efficiency. A separate restroom is integrated thoughtfully within the pod. This layout promotes an airy feeling and ease of movement, making the space practical for visitors.

Meditation Space

The meditation building is crafted to enhance tranquility. It features a minimal interior design with small windows that frame natural views, allowing sunlight to come in while keeping the focus on the outside landscape. This design element encourages a connection with nature, which is vital for a meditative experience.

Materiality and Sustainability

Local wood is chosen for the construction, supporting regional materials and reducing costs. The exterior of the buildings is covered with wooden slats, which helps them blend into the surrounding environment. Solar panels provide energy, while an underground rainwater collection system promotes sustainability and reduces the project's environmental impact.

Large openings throughout the buildings allow for ample natural light, creating spaces filled with warmth and openness. This thoughtful design ultimately fosters a calm atmosphere, inviting users to appreciate both the architecture and the surrounding nature.

The Next House: USA — A Global Call to Reimagine the American Suburb

`
Competition organisers

Buildner is launching The Next House: USA, a global architecture competition that challenges architects, designers, and thinkers to reimagine the American suburban home for the 21st century. For decades, the suburban house has symbolized comfort and stability, but today it often reflects excess, isolation, and environmental strain. This competition asks: how can the American home evolve to address climate urgency, economic pressures, and shifting social values?

Participants are tasked with designing a prototype home of no more than 1,500 sq ft (≈140 m²) for a household of two adults and one child. The design should be compact yet generous, adaptable, sustainable, affordable, and replicable across diverse U.S. contexts. More than a design exercise, the competition aims to spark a conversation about how homes can support healthier, smarter, and more connected communities.

The total prize fund is $20,000 USD. The final registration deadline is May 20, 2026, and winners will be announced on September 22, 2026. The Next House: USA invites architects, students, and visionaries worldwide to redefine what the American home means today—and what it should mean tomorrow.
