Blending concrete and wood, the pavilion creates a dynamic space that uses light to connect the underground Grjótagjá cave with the auroras above, serving as a cinematic hub for cultural engagement.
5 key facts about this project
01
Connection to the Grjótagjá cave informs the design and entrance layout.
02
The use of concrete for the exterior contrasts with a warm wooden interior.
03
Semi-subterranean form allows for integration with the surrounding landscape.
04
Distinct lighting strategies enhance the experience in each functional area.
05
Elevated cinema spaces are designed to draw attention to the auroras above.

The Iceland Movie Pavilion offers a thoughtful design that connects the natural phenomena of auroras with the Grjótagjá cave located underground. The project aims to respect Iceland's film history while considering the area’s unique environment and cultural significance. With a semi-underground structure, the design bridges the earth and sky, responding to the regional climate and topography.

Architectural Form

The structure’s semi-subterranean layout allows it to integrate well with the surrounding landscape. The design takes into account the challenges posed by the low angle of sunlight throughout the year. In winter, the presence of polar nights limits daylight, while summer brings extended hours of sun. By positioning the building to adapt to these conditions, the design creates a tranquil space that feels at one with nature.

Materiality

Concrete serves as the main material for the exterior, giving the building a solid and enduring quality that withstands the harsh weather conditions of Iceland. Inside, warm wood is used, creating a comforting contrast to the robust exterior. This combination of materials not only underscores the differences between the outside and inside but also enhances the emotional experience of visitors within the space.

Spatial Organization

Lighting plays an important role in shaping the experience within the pavilion. Each area is designed with unique lighting schemes, creating distinct atmospheres throughout the structure. This careful attention to lighting helps guide visitors as they move through various functional spaces. The layout encourages flow from the underground entrance to the elevated cinema, mirroring the connection to the sky above.

Design Details

The relationship between the architectural features and the natural surroundings is central to the design. The underground entrance evokes the nearby Grjótagjá cave, providing a clear link between the pavilion and its environment. Meanwhile, the elevated cinema areas draw attention upward, inspired by the shimmering lights of the auroras. This thoughtful design emphasizes the interaction of light and space, creating a rich experience that resonates with the local geographical context.

`
Competition organisers

The Buildner’s Unbuilt Award 2025 is an international architecture competition dedicated to recognizing and celebrating the value of unrealized architectural designs. It invites architects, designers, and students worldwide to submit visionary projects that have not yet been constructed, highlighting the power of ideas and the creativity behind the design process. By focusing on unbuilt work, the competition aims to bring forward concepts that shape the future of architecture and push the boundaries of the profession.

Participants can compete in three categories based on project scale: Small Wonders (up to 100 m²), Medium Marvels (101–999 m²), and Large Visions (over 1,000 m²). Each category winner will receive €20,000, and additional prizes include honorable mentions, student awards, and a special Best Presentation Award. Winning projects will gain significant international exposure through Buildner’s publicity campaign and a feature article on ArchDaily, providing a unique opportunity to showcase creative ideas to a global audience.

The Buildner’s Unbuilt Award 2025 encourages entrants to submit any type of unbuilt project, from conceptual visions to detailed designs, celebrating bold innovation without the constraints of realization. Important deadlines: registration closes on October 30, 2025; submissions are due by November 20, 2025; winners will be announced on December 17, 2025.
