Constructed with a central truss system for enhanced stability and support.
02
Utilizes composite concrete for structural integrity while minimizing environmental impact.
03
Features an open-plan design that promotes natural airflow and sunlight throughout.
04
Accommodates both human and equestrian use for interactive engagement with the environment.
05
Integrated low lighting solutions to reduce light pollution and maintain ecological balance.

The Kurgi Observation Tower, called "KVADRATS," sits in a natural landscape designed to enhance the experience between people and their surroundings. This structure serves as a space for recreation and observation, making it easier for visitors to appreciate the environment. The design revolves around a tubular shape that fits well with nature, allowing both humans and horses to engage with the landscape.

Form and Geometry

The tower uses simple geometric shapes, starting from a basic square, which helps it blend into the environment. This design approach promotes flexibility while ensuring minimal impact on the land. By creating multiple levels within the structure, it improves user experience and makes movement through the tower more straightforward.

Central Truss System

A central truss system acts as the main support for the tower. It connects different levels, providing access and vertical movement throughout the building. The open layout allows air and sunlight to enter freely, making the interior space comfortable and inviting.

Interaction with Nature

The design encourages a strong connection between the building and the natural world. By considering the needs of both people and horses, the tower creates an immersive environment that invites users to interact with the scenery. This focus on nature supports the idea of sustainability and respect for the surrounding ecosystem.

Material Considerations

Materials play an important role in the construction of the Kurgi Observation Tower. Composite concrete, RC beams, and welded angle bar trusses provide the necessary structural support for the building. These materials were chosen for their strength and suitability, aligning with the design’s aim for simplicity and minimal effect on the environment.

The observation deck provides clear views of the landscape, inviting visitors to engage with nature thoughtfully. Careful lighting highlights the structure at night, maintaining a balance that enhances visibility without disrupting the natural surroundings.

MICROHOME 10: Celebrating Small-Scale Living with €100,000 Prize Fund and Kingspan’s Innovation

`
Competition organisers

The MICROHOME 10 competition invites participants to submit visionary designs for off-grid, modular microhomes that push the limits of sustainable, small-scale living. Organised by Buildner in partnership with Kingspan and Hapi Homes, this tenth edition sets the challenge of designing a dwelling for two people within a maximum floor area of 25 m², encouraging bold solutions adaptable to any urban or rural location. The competition continues Buildner’s mission to foster innovative approaches to compact, energy-efficient housing that can address pressing global challenges.

This year’s edition offers a generous total prize fund of €100,000, including the Kingspan Award for designs that integrate high-performance Kingspan products and the Hapi Homes Award for a project selected for real-world construction. In addition to cash prizes, the winners gain international exposure through Buildner’s media partnerships, publications, and a dedicated MICROHOME magazine, further amplifying their ideas to the wider architectural community.

Key dates for MICROHOME 10 include the closing date for registration on 25 September 2025, the submission deadline on 29 October 2025 (11:59 p.m. London time), and the announcement of winners on 9 December 2025. These milestones ensure participants have clear timelines to develop and present their concepts, with early registration discounts available to support students and emerging designers worldwide.
