Brahman is an architectural retreat designed to foster a deep connection with nature. It is set in a tranquil landscape, intended to serve as a sanctuary for those seeking respite from the fast-paced demands of urban life. The design embraces organic forms, resulting in a cocoon-shaped structure that emphasizes harmony between the built environment and its natural surroundings.

Materiality and Structure

The retreat prominently features mycelium as the main construction material. Mycelium is the root structure of fungus. It is chosen for its excellent mechanical performance and its positive environmental impact. The building consists of three mycelium shells that are shaped using molds, supported by timber elements that add stability and warmth to the overall appearance. This choice of material reflects a commitment to sustainability.

Functional Zoning

Brahman includes various areas designed to enhance user experience. It has specific zones for living, cooking, and quiet relaxation, which allows occupants to engage with the space in different ways. The layout supports both individual and group activities, making it versatile for different needs.

Connection to Nature

Natural light fills the interior through large windows in the ceiling, providing views of the surrounding landscape. The entrance is designed with a low profile, creating a gentle bowing effect. This design choice symbolizes respect for nature and encourages a feeling of connection between the inside and outside. It invites occupants to engage with the environment as soon as they arrive.

Sustainable Practices

The design highlights a commitment to sustainability. Rainwater collection minimizes the need for external water sources. Heating is provided through a portable chimney that can also serve for cooking. This practical approach aligns with the retreat's minimalist values, allowing for efficient living within a natural setting.

Occupants enter through a thoughtfully designed entrance, where the low threshold encourages a respectful approach to the environment outside. It presents a clear invitation to engage fully with the natural setting, welcoming visitors into a space that embodies simplicity and attention to the world around it.
