The Casulo project is located in the Serra de Estrela mountains of Portugal. Designed as a quiet retreat, it focuses on providing a cozy and peaceful environment. The architecture reflects a concept likened to a cocoon, promoting both comfort and a close relationship with the natural world. The structure takes on a form that resembles a leaf, enhancing its connection to the landscape it inhabits.

Design Concept and Form

At its core, the design features a pod-like structure that echoes the shapes found in nature. This leaf-like silhouette encourages a sense of harmony between the building and its surroundings. The layout carefully balances privacy and openness, allowing guests to enjoy scenic views while feeling secure in their space. The overall design invites a calming experience that encourages relaxation and reflection.

Sustainable Material Choices

Bamboo is a central element in the construction of Casulo. This material, known for its rapid growth, plays a significant role in reducing the environmental impact of the building. It provides a lightweight and sturdy framework, allowing the design to explore its organic shapes effectively. Additionally, bamboo grills in the sleeping area create a direct link to the outdoors, reinforcing the experience of sleeping amidst nature.

Environmental Integration and Infrastructure

The project emphasizes sustainability through innovative systems, such as Soil Biotechnology for wastewater management. This method uses natural filtration to treat greywater, making it suitable for irrigation. Surrounding the structure, native plants create a vibrant landscape that supports local wildlife and enhances the ecological diversity of the area, blending the built environment with the natural habitat.

Design Details and Aesthetics

The roof of the structure is shaped like a curled leaf, providing both visual interest and thermal comfort for the occupants. A pathway lined with bamboo guides visitors into the retreat, leading them through an area filled with local plants. This thoughtful arrangement invites a deeper connection with nature while enhancing the overall aesthetic of the setting, allowing guests to feel immersed in their surroundings.
