The Meditating Ribbon is a meditation pavilion that connects architecture with the environment, situated by a calm lake and reached through a wooded path. The design concept focuses on soft, flowing curves inspired by natural forms, diverging from traditional straight lines. This pavilion provides a space for self-reflection, creating a warm, cocoon-like atmosphere that fosters tranquility and security for its users.

Design Concept

The architectural approach emphasizes organic shapes that engage with the landscape. The ribbon-like structure weaves gently through the surrounding vegetation, allowing the design to fit harmoniously within its context. By positioning part of the pavilion over the water and supporting it with cables, the design offers clear and inviting views of the peaceful scenery, enhancing the experience of meditation and calm.

Functional Layout

The interior is divided into specific areas that cater to user needs. A living block contains essential services, including dry toilets and a shower, which address practical requirements while keeping the ecological footprint low. A foldable shelf attached to the sink helps maximize usable space, showcasing the project’s practical and flexible approach to design.

Structural Characteristics

The pavilion consists of three distinct structural zones, starting with a curved roof made from plywood sheets that are carefully joined together to strengthen the overall framework. This roof design allows for a light and airy feel. The floor is constructed from traditional dimensioned wood raised above the ground to improve insulation and deter moisture. The deck is supported by three curved beams crafted from water-repellent plywood, reinforcing the idea of flexibility that runs throughout the project.

Design Detail

An extended screened porch emerges from the living block, creating a private area that still connects users to the natural surroundings. This feature provides a quiet transition space where individuals can reflect while remaining close to the calming environment. The combination of the pavilion's thoughtful layout and natural integration creates a truly welcoming retreat for moments of contemplation.

The Buildner’s Unbuilt Award 2025: Celebrating Architectural Creativity and Visionary Unbuilt Designs with a Total Prize Fund of €100,000

`
Competition organisers

The Buildner’s Unbuilt Award 2025 is an international architecture competition dedicated to recognizing and celebrating the value of unrealized architectural designs. It invites architects, designers, and students worldwide to submit visionary projects that have not yet been constructed, highlighting the power of ideas and the creativity behind the design process. By focusing on unbuilt work, the competition aims to bring forward concepts that shape the future of architecture and push the boundaries of the profession.

Participants can compete in three categories based on project scale: Small Wonders (up to 100 m²), Medium Marvels (101–999 m²), and Large Visions (over 1,000 m²). Each category winner will receive €20,000, and additional prizes include honorable mentions, student awards, and a special Best Presentation Award. Winning projects will gain significant international exposure through Buildner’s publicity campaign and a feature article on ArchDaily, providing a unique opportunity to showcase creative ideas to a global audience.

The Buildner’s Unbuilt Award 2025 encourages entrants to submit any type of unbuilt project, from conceptual visions to detailed designs, celebrating bold innovation without the constraints of realization. Important deadlines: registration closes on October 30, 2025; submissions are due by November 20, 2025; winners will be announced on December 17, 2025.
