The Abu Dhabi Flamingo Visitor Center is located in the diverse natural environment of Abu Dhabi. It serves as a space for education and tourism, aimed specifically at raising awareness of the local flamingo population. The design focuses on creating a strong connection between the structures and the surrounding landscape, using forms that represent both community and interaction. Key to this concept is a collection of shapes that provide shade, making the space comfortable for visitors while encouraging them to engage with nature.

Design Concept

At the heart of the visitor center lies a blend of unique forms described as a "shape with a hat" and a "shape with a coat." These shapes are more than just buildings; they symbolize the cultural essence of the region. By clustering these forms, the design creates shaded areas that promote social gatherings and interactions among visitors. The layout also opens up the landscape around the center, fostering a village-like atmosphere that encourages connection among guests.

Spatial Organization

The interior layout is carefully arranged to facilitate movement and interaction. Important areas such as the display area, reception, waiting area, and café are located in a way that promotes easy access. The display area, for example, is situated right next to the entrance, allowing visitors to immediately engage with the exhibits. This strategic arrangement ensures that the center accommodates the diverse needs of visitors while maintaining an efficient flow within the space.

Visitor Engagement

The design also prioritizes visual connections, offering impressive views from common areas like the waiting room and the second floor. These sightlines invite people to appreciate the natural surroundings. Furthermore, a mesh element between the clustered shapes allows for free movement for both visitors and flamingos. This element encourages a shared experience, highlighting the relationship between the center and the wildlife it aims to protect.

In its final details, the design achieves a balance between human-made structures and the natural landscape. Each component is integrated thoughtfully, reflecting an approach that considers environmental sustainability. The Abu Dhabi Flamingo Visitor Center stands as a place of learning and appreciation for the local ecosystem, inviting guests to explore and connect with the native flamingo population.
