Gaudi La Coma - Arte de La Nube is an artist's residence and education complex located in Huesca, Spain. The setting reflects a focus on sustainability and community involvement, inspired by the design principles of Antoni Gaudi. The aim is to create a space where artistic practices can flourish alongside ecological awareness, using the idea of clouds as a symbol of shelter and connection.

Design Concept

The design concept revolves around the cloud metaphor, influencing how spaces connect and flow. This concept fosters a sense of collaboration among artists. Integrated sculpting and collage workshops serve as both active construction areas and future creative training spaces. This dual function enhances the artistic atmosphere of the complex.

Sustainability Initiatives

Sustainability is central to the design's execution. By including workshops on-site, the need to import decorative panels is eliminated, reducing environmental impact. The project also prioritizes community involvement, aiming to create a dialogue between artists and local residents. This initiative highlights the importance of cultural exchange in the creative process.

Spatial Organization

The layout of the complex focuses on functionality and accessibility. It features artist residences, a visitor center, co-working spaces, and dedicated workshop areas. Each space is designed to promote interaction and creativity, fostering a vibrant environment for artistic exploration. The main entrance provides a welcoming transition into the various areas, enhancing the user's experience throughout the complex.

Architectural Integration

Visual representations of the complex highlight a cohesive design language that integrates well with the natural landscape. The architecture emphasizes openness and the use of natural light, creating connections between indoor and outdoor spaces. The inclusion of an olive farm reinforces the commitment to sustainability and ties the project back to its geographic roots.

At the heart of the design are sculptural elements that echo the soft forms of clouds, creating an engaging setting for both artists and visitors to work and gather.

Competition organisers

The MICROHOME 10 competition invites participants to submit visionary designs for off-grid, modular microhomes that push the limits of sustainable, small-scale living. Organised by Buildner in partnership with Kingspan and Hapi Homes, this tenth edition sets the challenge of designing a dwelling for two people within a maximum floor area of 25 m², encouraging bold solutions adaptable to any urban or rural location. The competition continues Buildner’s mission to foster innovative approaches to compact, energy-efficient housing that can address pressing global challenges.

This year’s edition offers a generous total prize fund of €100,000, including the Kingspan Award for designs that integrate high-performance Kingspan products and the Hapi Homes Award for a project selected for real-world construction. In addition to cash prizes, the winners gain international exposure through Buildner’s media partnerships, publications, and a dedicated MICROHOME magazine, further amplifying their ideas to the wider architectural community.

Key dates for MICROHOME 10 include the closing date for registration on 25 September 2025, the submission deadline on 29 October 2025 (11:59 p.m. London time), and the announcement of winners on 9 December 2025. These milestones ensure participants have clear timelines to develop and present their concepts, with early registration discounts available to support students and emerging designers worldwide.
