5 key facts about this project
The project "Stay with Velo: Velo As is Velo Oasis" enhances the experience of cycling along the EuroVelo bike paths across Europe. Located in several countries such as France, Switzerland, Germany, Austria, Slovakia, Hungary, Croatia, Serbia, and Bulgaria, the aim is to provide multifunctional rest stops for cyclists. The design centers on creating spots for rest, social interaction, and user engagement, focusing on the needs of traveling cyclists.
Spatial Organization
The layout emphasizes adaptable spaces that allow users to personalize their environments. By reducing the use of solid walls, the design promotes an open atmosphere that encourages communication among travelers. Users can shape their space starting from a basic box configuration, which helps use limited areas effectively and supports various needs.
Materiality and Functionality
Lightweight fabric defines spaces within the structure, creating a welcoming feel that contrasts with standard architectural elements. This choice enhances visibility and encourages interaction among users, effectively minimizing physical barriers. Functional elements like columns support the structure while integrating practical features such as ambient LED lighting, improving safety and comfort during evening use.
Strategic Rest Stops
A series of rest stops are placed at regular intervals along the bike routes. These stops are designed to serve cyclists every 16 km (Level 1), 48 km (Level 2), and 80 km (Level 3). This strategic arrangement ensures convenience and easy access, catering to the distance cyclists are likely to travel in a single day, thus improving their overall experience.
Sustainability Considerations
The design also addresses environmental concerns by incorporating rainwater management systems that collect rainwater from the roofs of the stops. This sustainable approach adds functionality to the rest stops and fits well with the community-oriented design concept.
The project features practical details like stainless steel columns, plywood finishes, bicycle racks, and stone sinks. These elements reflect a commitment to durability and usability in communal spaces, enhancing the overall user experience.
