The LIFE COTTAGE project explores the ideas of community interaction and environmental sustainability within Portugal's cultural setting. Located on a scenic cliff, the design features Sleeping Pods that blend with the landscape, providing spaces that promote social connection while also offering personal retreats. The concept highlights a deliberate transition from private areas to communal zones, aiming to create a sense of belonging and shared experience among users.

Design Concept

Architecture is organized into specific zones that serve various functions, such as relaxation, yoga, and gatherings. This arrangement allows for both individual moments of peace and group activities. Open communal areas are integrated with private spaces, encouraging visitors to engage with one another and fostering a lively atmosphere.

Material Considerations

Sustainability serves as a core principle for the design, making use of recyclable materials sourced from local vernacular architecture. By choosing these materials, the project honors the regional context while reducing environmental impact. This connection to cultural heritage is a key aspect of the overall design.

Climatic Adaptation

Attention to climatic conditions is evident throughout the design. The use of passive strategies for heating and cooling limits the need for mechanical systems. A thermal climate index informs choices that help maintain comfortable indoor environments. Data indicates that users will enjoy suitable conditions for a significant portion of their time, addressing concerns about heat and cold.

User Comfort

Natural ventilation plays an important role in the design, helping to control humidity and improve air quality indoors. Daylit spaces are carefully planned to maximize sunlight, which can help uplift mood and promote well-being. These design choices reflect a commitment to creating environments that focus on the health and comfort of the people within them.

The Sleeping Pods offer expansive views of the surrounding landscape, connecting users directly with nature and enriching their experience within the space.
