Located at the base of Hverfjall Volcano in Iceland, Skjól! acts as a rest stop for hikers exploring the area. The design focuses on connecting with the natural surroundings while meeting the practical needs of those who seek adventure outdoors. This facility allows visitors to store snow jackets, rent equipment, and find information about their hikes. It also provides a space for refreshments and group gatherings, creating a supportive environment for outdoor activities.

Functionality

The main goal of Skjól! is to offer a convenient place for rest and preparation. The layout includes a coffee shop that serves warm drinks and an auditorium where short presentations enhance the visitor experience. Each area is arranged to promote accessibility, making it easy for guests to move around and transition smoothly from outdoor activities to indoor comfort.

Materiality

In terms of materials, Skjól! relies on Cross Laminated Timber (CLT) as its primary building component. This choice allows for quick construction and aligns well with the environment. The foundation is made of concrete, giving the structure stability against the tough weather conditions typical to Iceland. An exterior finish of clear oak cladding helps the building blend in with nature while ensuring it remains durable over time.

Design Integration

The overall design balances usefulness with respect for the environment. Essential features, such as storage and restroom facilities, increase the usability of the rest stop. The layout reflects a thoughtful approach to the volcanic landscape, maintaining a respectful distance from the surrounding wilderness.

Large windows in the auditorium frame views of Hverfjall Volcano, allowing visitors to enjoy the landscape while sheltered inside. These details contribute to a welcoming atmosphere, making Skjól! a valuable resource for outdoor enthusiasts.
