The Kiwi Droplet is a meditation cabin located in a peaceful forest in New Zealand, designed to connect with its natural surroundings. The building takes on the form of a water droplet, symbolizing life and purity. It serves as a retreat for meditation, aligning its architecture with the idea of mindfulness to create a space that encourages reflection and introspection.

ARCHITECTURAL CONCEPT

The concept revolves around the image of a water droplet, reflecting the importance of water in our lives. The droplet shape not only creates visual interest but also carries deeper meanings of healing and clarity. This design approach focuses on creating a harmonious relationship with the landscape, allowing the cabin to feel like a natural part of the environment rather than a separate entity.

SPATIAL ORGANIZATION

Inside, the cabin can accommodate up to five people at a time, providing room for both sitting and reclining during meditation sessions. The layout fosters an atmosphere that is quiet and calming, minimizing distractions. Visitors reach the cabin by walking a short pathway, which sets the tone for a mindful experience as they transition from the busyness of daily life to a space designed for reflection.

MATERIALITY AND STRUCTURE

The cabin's exterior is finished with slate, establishing a connection to the natural setting. The interior surfaces are rendered with clay, which allows the space to maintain a healthy exchange of air. The structure rests on a micro-pile foundation and is supported by ten glued laminated wooden ribs that create its distinctive droplet shape. The angle of the cabin is inclined at 15 degrees, designed to suggest the gentle landing of a droplet on the earth.

NATURAL LIGHTING

Natural light is thoughtfully incorporated into the cabin's design. Openings throughout the structure allow sunlight to enter, casting patterns that shift as the day progresses. This interplay of light and shadow enhances the meditative quality of the space, creating a dynamic experience for those inside.

The cabin stands in quiet harmony with the surrounding forest, where beams of light filter through the foliage, illuminating the interior and enriching the atmosphere for meditation.
