The "Ph - Petite house" project represents a thoughtful approach to living in smaller homes, focusing on community and sustainability. Located in an environment conducive to social interactions, the design concept aims to meet the need for affordable housing while promoting a shared lifestyle. Each microhome is crafted to provide essential living spaces that enhance functionality and support community engagement.

Design Philosophy

At the heart of the project is a commitment to minimalism. The idea encourages residents to own fewer possessions, allowing them to lead simpler, more meaningful lives. This approach not only helps reduce environmental impact but also fosters connections among neighbors. By living together in a shared space, residents can build a sense of belonging that is often missing in traditional housing.

Multifunctional Living Spaces

Microhomes are designed with flexibility in mind. Each space serves multiple purposes—living, working, and dining. This versatility allows residents to make the most out of limited square footage. Additionally, communal areas are integrated into the design to encourage socializing and cooperation, reinforcing the project’s emphasis on community living.

Material Selection

The project incorporates locally sourced materials such as clay, wood, and straw. These materials are chosen for their ecological benefits and thermal efficiency. By using resources from the surrounding area, the design minimizes transportation impact and supports the local economy. This careful selection demonstrates a commitment to sustainable building practices.

Community Engagement

Educational initiatives, including workshops and mentorship programs, are central to the project's vision. These opportunities empower residents with the skills needed to build their homes, creating a sense of ownership and pride. The focus on community dynamics fosters a collaborative atmosphere, allowing residents to connect with each other and work together toward common goals.

The microhomes feature layouts that prioritize comfort and utility. Natural light fills the interiors, creating a welcoming atmosphere that enhances everyday living. With thoughtful design at the forefront, each detail contributes to a quality of life that respects both individual needs and collective well-being.

Competition organisers

The MICROHOME 10 competition invites participants to submit visionary designs for off-grid, modular microhomes that push the limits of sustainable, small-scale living. Organised by Buildner in partnership with Kingspan and Hapi Homes, this tenth edition sets the challenge of designing a dwelling for two people within a maximum floor area of 25 m², encouraging bold solutions adaptable to any urban or rural location. The competition continues Buildner’s mission to foster innovative approaches to compact, energy-efficient housing that can address pressing global challenges.

This year’s edition offers a generous total prize fund of €100,000, including the Kingspan Award for designs that integrate high-performance Kingspan products and the Hapi Homes Award for a project selected for real-world construction. In addition to cash prizes, the winners gain international exposure through Buildner’s media partnerships, publications, and a dedicated MICROHOME magazine, further amplifying their ideas to the wider architectural community.

Key dates for MICROHOME 10 include the closing date for registration on 25 September 2025, the submission deadline on 29 October 2025 (11:59 p.m. London time), and the announcement of winners on 9 December 2025. These milestones ensure participants have clear timelines to develop and present their concepts, with early registration discounts available to support students and emerging designers worldwide.
