Circular Water Feature and Glass Parapets Enhancing Cultural Reflection

Project in-detail

A circular water feature complements the glass parapets and wooden elements of the observation tower, creating a space that fosters cultural reflection and connection with nature.
5 key facts about this project
01
A link from the 1989 human chain is integrated into the design as a symbol of unity.
02
The structure's linear form allows for dynamic views of the surrounding landscape.
03
A circular water feature beneath the tower attracts local wildlife for observation.
04
The use of glass parapets enhances transparency and unobstructed sightlines.
05
Semi-circular stairs facilitate comfortable viewing and extended stays at the site.

The Gateway of Kurgi is located within Kurgi farm, designed as an observation tower that also serves as a memorial to the unity of Latvia, Estonia, and Lithuania. Rooted in the historical context of the human chain formed in 1989, the project merges cultural significance with an appreciation of the natural environment. It creates a dialogue between people and the landscape while inviting visitors to reflect on shared histories.

Design Concept

The structure expresses a simple yet effective form that blends with the surrounding landscape. It resembles a straight line, facilitating movement and observation without overpowering the natural beauty of the site. The incorporation of a historical element from the human chain highlights a meaningful connection to the cultural identity of the three nations, giving the design depth and context.

Inner Circle and Interaction

An inner circular area allows visitors to rest and engage with nature in a more personal way. This space encourages a break from the fast pace of daily life and promotes contemplation of the environment. Beneath the tower, a circular water feature attracts wildlife, enhancing the experience for those who come to observe and reflect.

Accessibility and Experience

Accessibility is an essential aspect of the design. A cantilevered ramp provides different viewpoints of the landscape, allowing visitors to move easily throughout the structure. This design feature supports an enjoyable sensory experience while ensuring all individuals can access the site comfortably. Visitors are encouraged to explore various elevations, deepening their understanding of the area’s beauty.

Materiality and Detail

The materials chosen for the Gateway contribute to its overall appeal and function. The structure includes glass that is 12mm thick, offering clear views while maintaining safety through transparent parapets. This glass integrates with wood panels that add a touch of warmth while being supported by steel trusses that provide stability. White text decals on the glass parapet offer critical information about the surroundings, enhancing visitor engagement. Semi-circular stairs add comfort for those who wish to spend more time at the site, making it easier to appreciate the landscape.

The design culminates in a panoramic viewpoint that presents a broad view of the rugged terrain, inviting visitors to soak in the calmness of the area and reflect on their experiences amid nature.
