The Gateway of Kurgi is located within Kurgi farm, designed as an observation tower that also serves as a memorial to the unity of Latvia, Estonia, and Lithuania. Rooted in the historical context of the human chain formed in 1989, the project merges cultural significance with an appreciation of the natural environment. It creates a dialogue between people and the landscape while inviting visitors to reflect on shared histories.

Design Concept

The structure expresses a simple yet effective form that blends with the surrounding landscape. It resembles a straight line, facilitating movement and observation without overpowering the natural beauty of the site. Inner Circle and Interaction

An inner circular area allows visitors to rest and engage with nature in a more personal way. Materiality and Detail

The materials chosen for the Gateway contribute to its overall appeal and function. The structure includes glass that is 12mm thick, offering clear views while maintaining safety through transparent parapets. This glass integrates with wood panels that add a touch of warmth while being supported by steel trusses that provide stability. White text decals on the glass parapet offer critical information about the surroundings, enhancing visitor engagement. Semi-circular stairs add comfort for those who wish to spend more time at the site, making it easier to appreciate the landscape.
