Circular Timber Pavilion Embracing Volcanic Landscape with Steaming Pond

Project in-detail

A central steaming pond defines the interior of this circular timber cafe, designed to harmonize with the volcanic landscape of Myvath while providing a warm gathering space for visitors.
5 key facts about this project
01
A central steaming pond resembles a volcanic mouth, enhancing the interior ambiance.
02
Circular geometry reflects the surrounding volcanic landscape, creating visual harmony.
03
Timber construction minimizes environmental impact with reduced foundation needs.
04
A bent A-frame design improves thermal performance in harsh climate conditions.
05
Large windows maximize natural light and provide panoramic views of the landscape.

The Volcano Cafe is located in the Myvath region of Iceland, a place known for its unusual volcanic landscape of black soil and rugged terrain. The cafe serves as a gathering spot for visitors looking to experience the natural beauty of the area. The design seeks to connect with the unique environment while providing a comforting space for relaxation and socialization.

Circular Geometry

The design is defined by circular shapes that echo the forms found in the surrounding volcanic landscape. This approach enhances the relationship between the structure and its environment. The circular motifs create an inviting feel and encourage visitors to engage with the landscape in a meaningful way.

Vernacular Design Influence

Elements of traditional Icelandic architecture are incorporated into the design, particularly through the use of an A-frame structure. This choice reflects local building practices and meets the needs of modern use. The A-frame helps improve the building’s thermal performance while offering an attractive profile that resonates with the dramatic Icelandic scenery.

Interior Features

Inside the cafe, a central steaming pond is shaped like a volcanic mouth. This feature serves as a focal point, creating a warm and tranquil atmosphere. The layout is designed to feel like a living room, where visitors can relax and interact with one another. Large windows provide expansive views of the landscape, making it easy to appreciate the beauty outside.

Sustainable Practices

The design emphasizes sustainability by using timber, which helps lessen the environmental impact. This choice allows for a lighter foundation and minimizes disruption to the site. The positioning of the building takes advantage of sunlight for natural light and warmth. Geothermal energy will be used to supply heat and hot water throughout the year.

The roof geometry captures sunlight, breaking it up in ways that create interesting light and shadow inside. This feature enhances the visitor experience, drawing attention to the surrounding landscape and making each visit feel unique and connected to nature.
