The Volcano Coffee Shop - Skylight is situated in the northern region of Iceland, east of Lake Myvatn, at the base of the well-known Hverfjall volcano. The establishment combines the functions of a café and an exhibition space that aims to educate visitors on the geological importance of the volcano. The design focuses on creating a connection with the natural landscape, allowing guests to appreciate their surroundings while enjoying refreshments and learning about the area's history.

Design Concept

The main idea behind the design is to foster a close relationship between the building and its volcanic setting. Located at the starting point of the hiking trail leading to the summit of Hverfjall, the facility offers convenient access to tourists. By merging the café and exhibition areas, it encourages an inviting atmosphere where visitors can rest and reflect on their time spent in nature.

Exhibition Room

A highlight of the design is the circular exhibition room, which mimics the shape of the nearby volcano. This space does not feature side wall windows but instead uses a circular skylight that brings natural light into the interior. The skylight enhances the experience of being inside a volcano, creating a unique ambiance. Illuminated displays on the walls will present information about Hverfjall's geological history, providing a meaningful learning opportunity for all who enter.

Café Area

The café accommodates more than 80 seats and is designed for comfort and functionality. The layout allows for easy movement among visitors, ensuring an enjoyable experience while they take a break. Wood and concrete are the main materials used in the interior, chosen for their durability and natural look. The inclusion of plants aims to create a warm atmosphere and strengthen the connection between indoor and outdoor spaces.

Views and Sustainability

Large windows, particularly on the southern side of the building, provide expansive views of the volcano and the surrounding Icelandic landscape. This feature enhances the relationship between the inside of the café and its impressive surroundings, encouraging visitors to connect with the environment. Additionally, the flat roof design allows for the potential installation of solar panels, reflecting an awareness of sustainable practices while supporting the facility's energy needs.

The design creates an atmosphere conducive to relaxation, especially within the exhibition room, where guests can enjoy a peaceful respite from their outdoor activities. The thoughtful combination of natural light, carefully arranged layouts, and sensory experiences results in a space that resonates with both the geological significance and the beauty of Iceland’s landscape.
