The Last Holiday - Home for Terminally Ill provides a calm environment for terminally ill patients. Located in Pyeongchang, Korea, the building is situated to foster a connection with its natural surroundings, enhancing comfort and peace during a sensitive time in life. The design concept focuses on creating spaces that promote empathy and support, combining therapy areas with opportunities for reflection and family interactions.

Spatial Organization

The layout is carefully designed to offer a mix of communal and private spaces. Rooms dedicated to therapy provide both physical and emotional support, allowing for a complete approach to care. Family-oriented areas, such as gathering rooms and kitchens, encourage important connections among loved ones. This design approach promotes a sense of familiarity and comfort, which is vital for patients during their final moments.

Connection to Nature

A key feature is the circular promenade that extends above the river, allowing visitors to enjoy expansive views of the landscape. This element enhances the connection to the natural environment, offering a space for contemplation and engagement with the surrounding beauty. The integration of natural elements within the building creates a calm atmosphere that supports emotional well-being, which is crucial for patients and their families.

Serene Spaces

On the top floor, quiet rooms are designed for moments of peaceful reflection. These spaces provide patients with panoramic views and a tranquil setting. Such rooms cater specifically to terminally ill individuals who wish to spend their final moments in comfort and privacy, emphasizing their dignity.

Accessible Design

The design includes features that ensure easy access for individuals with physical challenges. Thoughtfully planned pathways allow for comfortable movement throughout the building. This focus on circulation fosters independence while encouraging connections among patients and families. Each area maintains a sense of closeness, particularly in significant moments, creating an environment that is supportive and caring.

Large windows bring in natural light, framing views of the serene landscape outside and highlighting the relationship between the building and its surroundings. This design detail helps to create a warm and inviting backdrop for important experiences shared within.
