The Natural Cabin is located in the Hapuhakohe Mountains, where it is designed as a peaceful space for meditation and reflection. The cabin incorporates a circular shape that allows for movement and interaction with the surrounding meadows. This approach not only supports meditation practices but also encourages users to connect with nature in a meaningful way.

Spatial Organization

The layout inside the cabin features different areas that serve various functions in the meditation process. These include an entrance that welcomes visitors, two transfer spaces that aid users in entering a meditative state, a central meditation area for deep practice, and a small altar for processing flower essences. Each space is thoughtfully arranged to create a calm atmosphere, allowing individuals to engage fully with their meditation.

User Interaction

Stairs play an important role in connecting the various spaces within the cabin. They encourage users to interact with the environment in distinct ways. The design accommodates a range of seating arrangements that allow for different postures during meditation. This flexibility increases comfort and makes the space adaptable to individual needs.

Materiality and Connection

The focus on natural materials enhances the relationship between individuals and the environment. While specific materials are not mentioned, the emphasis is clearly on creating a connection with the surrounding landscape. This approach promotes mindfulness and encourages users to engage with the natural world around them.

Large windows frame views of the mountains, blending the inside of the cabin with the outside landscape. Natural light fills the space, creating changing patterns throughout the day. This creates a rich sensory experience that invites quiet contemplation.

Competition organisers

The MICROHOME 10 competition invites participants to submit visionary designs for off-grid, modular microhomes that push the limits of sustainable, small-scale living. Organised by Buildner in partnership with Kingspan and Hapi Homes, this tenth edition sets the challenge of designing a dwelling for two people within a maximum floor area of 25 m², encouraging bold solutions adaptable to any urban or rural location. The competition continues Buildner’s mission to foster innovative approaches to compact, energy-efficient housing that can address pressing global challenges.

This year’s edition offers a generous total prize fund of €100,000, including the Kingspan Award for designs that integrate high-performance Kingspan products and the Hapi Homes Award for a project selected for real-world construction. In addition to cash prizes, the winners gain international exposure through Buildner’s media partnerships, publications, and a dedicated MICROHOME magazine, further amplifying their ideas to the wider architectural community.

Key dates for MICROHOME 10 include the closing date for registration on 25 September 2025, the submission deadline on 29 October 2025 (11:59 p.m. London time), and the announcement of winners on 9 December 2025.
