On the east coast of Lake Mývatn in Northern Iceland, a hot spring guest house has been designed to reflect the beauty and character of its natural surroundings. The structure acts as a retreat for visitors, allowing them to connect with the landscape known for its geothermal features. The overarching design concept focuses on harmonizing with nature, aiming to create a space where people can experience the unique aspects of the Icelandic environment.

Concept and Design Approach

The design features a single-layer structure that embodies simplicity and is intended to blend with the remote landscape. Circular shapes are prominent in the architecture, promoting an open and fluid connection between inside and outside. This form encourages interaction with the environment by reducing barriers typically found in conventional buildings.

Spatial Arrangement

The building consists of two main circular masses, each serving a specific purpose. One area is dedicated to nature, enhancing the visitor’s awareness of the scenic landscape, while the second space prioritizes water, an essential element of the guest house's function. This organization helps to diversify the experiences available to guests, allowing them to engage with the lush surroundings in meaningful ways.

Connection to Local Community

The design is inspired by the nearby Vogafjós Farm Resort, a family-operated establishment with a long history of nearly 120 years. This connection highlights the importance of local culture and traditions. Visitors can enjoy authentic culinary offerings sourced from the area, helping to immerse them in the community and its agricultural practices.

Design Characteristics

A key feature of the guest house is direct access to outdoor hot springs, with paths connecting these areas from the guest accommodations to communal spaces. This accessibility promotes wellness, encouraging guests to fully engage with the thermal resources that characterize the landscape. The layout includes open public areas that facilitate socializing while also providing private spaces for relaxation. These elements work together to create a calm atmosphere that reflects the dramatic beauty of Iceland’s scenery.
