The Abu Dhabi Flamingo Visitor Center, known as 'O-ring', is an architectural design set within a wetland ecological park in Abu Dhabi. It integrates with the natural surroundings to create a space focused on visitor experiences that highlight the area's ecological features. The design emphasizes a circular shape, symbolizing the natural processes of life and the connections among different elements in nature. This approach allows for a unique viewpoint of the bog, encouraging a deeper appreciation of the environmental context.

Architectural Concept

The design is centered around a circular layout that facilitates clear views of the wetland. This shape creates a welcoming and open atmosphere, inviting visitors to engage with the landscape. The entrance is thoughtfully positioned for easy access from main traffic routes, guiding visitors smoothly from outside to inside. The flow of people is organized well, separating pedestrians from vehicles and easing movement throughout the center.

Spatial Dynamics

Diagonal cuts in the structure contribute to a sense of openness, allowing light and views to enter freely. This design creates a natural interaction between inside spaces and the outdoors. The first-floor courtyard illustrates this connection beautifully, feeling like an extension of the environment due to large, continuous windows. These windows frame the landscape, allowing the beauty of the wetlands to become part of the visitor's experience.

Water Circulation

An interesting aspect of 'O-ring' is its approach to water circulation. A shallow water feature on the roof leads to a small waterfall that cascades down to the second floor. This not only showcases the natural cycle of water but also emphasizes the building's dedication to sustainability. Water collected from the upper levels is directed into planting areas on the first floor, reinforcing the connection between the building and its ecological context.

Materiality and Transparency

The choice of materials plays an important role in the design. Transparent materials enhance views between the inside and outside, creating a fluid relationship with the environment. The untreated glass windows throughout the first-floor courtyard effectively highlight the surrounding wetland. They allow natural light to enter and create a sense of being in the landscape, reminding visitors that they are part of a larger ecological system.

The design of the Abu Dhabi Flamingo Visitor Center 'O-ring' emphasizes a blend of nature and structure. The circular layout, thoughtful details, and design strategies showcase the beauty of the wetlands, giving visitors an enriching experience as they explore this unique environment. Each element contributes to a narrative that celebrates the connection between architecture and the natural world.

The Next House: USA — A Global Call to Reimagine the American Suburb

`
Competition organisers

Buildner is launching The Next House: USA, a global architecture competition that challenges architects, designers, and thinkers to reimagine the American suburban home for the 21st century. For decades, the suburban house has symbolized comfort and stability, but today it often reflects excess, isolation, and environmental strain. This competition asks: how can the American home evolve to address climate urgency, economic pressures, and shifting social values?

Participants are tasked with designing a prototype home of no more than 1,500 sq ft (≈140 m²) for a household of two adults and one child. The design should be compact yet generous, adaptable, sustainable, affordable, and replicable across diverse U.S. contexts. More than a design exercise, the competition aims to spark a conversation about how homes can support healthier, smarter, and more connected communities.

The total prize fund is $20,000 USD. The final registration deadline is May 20, 2026, and winners will be announced on September 22, 2026. The Next House: USA invites architects, students, and visionaries worldwide to redefine what the American home means today—and what it should mean tomorrow.
