Circular Form and Green Roof Crafted from Sustainable Materials in Iceland's Volcanic Landscape

Project in-detail

Crafted with a green roof and post-tension concrete, the circular structure seamlessly integrates into Iceland's volcanic landscape, providing a functional space for visitors to enjoy coffee while engaging with the surrounding geology.
5 key facts about this project
01
Circular design minimizes visual impact on the volcanic landscape.
02
Extensive use of fritted glass ensures privacy while maintaining natural light.
03
A green roof promotes biodiversity and offers insulation benefits.
04
Post-tension concrete provides structural resilience in a seismic region.
05
Pathways guide visitor movement, enhancing interaction with the surroundings.

The PIVOT Volcano Coffee Shop is an architectural project strategically located in the volcanic landscapes of Iceland. This coffee shop is designed not only to serve beverages but to enhance the experience of its natural surroundings. Its architecture fosters a connection between visitors and the geothermal features of the area, emphasizing sustainable practices and environmental engagement.

The structure is characterized by a circular form that adapts to the natural contours of the topography. This design choice minimizes the visual impact on the landscape while offering an immersive spatial experience. The building features extensive use of glass, allowing for panoramic views of the volcanic environment. Visitors are invited to engage with the surrounding landscape from the interior spaces, underlining a concept of openness and connection to nature.

The project serves multiple functions: it operates as a coffee shop, a gathering space for community interaction, and an educational hub that showcases the unique geological context of Iceland. The interior layout includes various zones for seating, dining, and educational displays about volcanic activity and Icelandic culture.

The integration of a green roof is a particularly unique aspect of this design, which not only aids in insulation but promotes local biodiversity. The roof serves as an extension of the natural landscape, inviting visitors to appreciate the ecological richness of the site. Additionally, the building employs sustainable materials such as post-tension concrete and fritted glass that enhance the structural integrity while ensuring energy efficiency.

Another significant aspect of the PIVOT project is its emphasis on movement—a concept represented through the design of pathways that guide visitors from entryways into the coffee shop's main areas. This design promotes a journey through the space, encouraging exploration and interaction.

Architectural plans and sections provide valuable insights into the spatial organization and materiality of the project. By reviewing these elements, one can understand the thoughtful approaches taken in this design that prioritize ecological sensitivity and user experience.

To gain a comprehensive understanding of the PIVOT Volcano Coffee Shop and its design intricacies, including architectural ideas and visual representations, explore the project presentation further. An overview of the architectural designs will enhance the appreciation of this unique architectural endeavor in Iceland.
