Circular Café with Elevated Concrete Footing and Volcanic Rock Courtyard

Project in-detail

Elevated on concrete piles, the circular café integrates volcanic rocks in its courtyard, offering a unique resting place for hikers at the base of Hverfjall volcano.
5 key facts about this project
01
Elevated design minimizes land disruption while providing views of the volcano.
02
Circular courtyard features local volcanic rock and moss for natural integration.
03
Distinct double-sloped roof mirrors traditional Icelandic architecture.
04
Lightweight steel frame allows for efficient prefabrication and assembly.
05
Strategic glass curtain walls enhance natural lighting within the café.

"ROUND COSMOS" is located at the foot of the Hverfjall volcano in northern Iceland. The building is designed to serve as a coffee shop and a rest stop for hikers and visitors to the area. The overall design draws from the circular shape of the volcano, creating a structure that works in harmony with the landscape. This project reflects elements of traditional Icelandic architecture while introducing a modern interpretation that meets current needs.

Circulation and Spatial Organization
The layout efficiently separates service spaces from those meant for public use. Areas like restrooms and kitchens receive less natural light, keeping them functional yet discreet. In contrast, the café and exhibition spaces are designed to allow abundant daylight. This thoughtful organization enhances movement flow and makes the building user-friendly for all.

Central Courtyard Feature
A central circular courtyard stands out as a major aspect of the design. It is surrounded by local materials and features stacks of volcanic rocks and moss, creating a connection to the natural environment. This courtyard not only provides visual interest but also serves as a peaceful area for visitors. It offers a place to relax and enjoy the unique scenery of the region.

Structural and Material Considerations
The structure rises about 50 centimeters above the ground, supported by concrete piles that limit disruption to the site. This elevation grants impressive views of the volcano and nearby landscapes. The exterior design includes a continuous double-sloped roof that aligns with traditional methods in Icelandic architecture, facilitating water management during rain. A lightweight steel frame comprises the main structure, while a glass curtain wall allows natural light to flood the interior, connecting patrons to the outside. The exterior is covered with white metal corrugated sheets that provide durability, contrasting subtly with warm wooden elements inside.

An interesting design element is the interplay of light within the café. Carefully placed windows and openings draw in sunlight, creating a lively atmosphere. This design choice not only enhances the experience for visitors but also emphasizes the connection between indoor and outdoor spaces, fostering an appreciation for the surrounding landscape.
