A circular atrium encased in polycarbonate panels enhances natural light while promoting a sense of openness and privacy in a residential setting at the foot of Tanglang Mountain.
5 key facts about this project
01
A circular atrium serves as the main light source for the interior.
02
Thin columns enhance the verticality and spatial clarity throughout the design.
03
Circular polycarbonate panels surround the perimeter, allowing natural light while maintaining privacy.
04
Functional rooms are arranged to form a central circular corridor, promoting seamless flow.
05
Strategic window placement softens indoor lighting and enhances outdoor views.

Set at the foot of Tanglang Mountain in the Nanshan District of Shenzhen, the design seeks to create a unique atmosphere that feels light and open. The concept revolves around the idea of obscuring direction to encourage movement and curiosity within the space. By integrating the natural surroundings, the design invites users to experience their environment more fully without traditional limitations imposed by architecture.

Conceptual Framework

A circular plan form serves as the foundation of the design, enabling fluid movement throughout the interior spaces. This shape eliminates rigid pathways, allowing occupants to navigate organically. At the core lies a circular atrium, which acts as the main source of natural light and serves as a welcoming focal point. This atrium not only brightens the interior but also fosters a sense of community among users by inviting them to gather.

Spatial Arrangement

Rooms are arranged with careful consideration of their functions, creating a circular corridor that connects various spaces. This layout supports easy circulation while allowing for individual areas to retain their identity. Thin columns line the circular gallery, adding visual interest and contributing to the clear separation between the atrium and the surrounding spaces. This design choice enhances the overall aesthetic while maintaining the open feeling of the environment.

Light and Interaction

Windows designed to be crosswise let in softer light, creating pleasant indoor conditions. French windows are positioned thoughtfully to maximize views and enhance the connection with the outside. This careful placement balances privacy with openness, making it easy for occupants to enjoy both indoor and outdoor experiences. The perimeter of the house is surrounded by circular polycarbonate panels, which protect privacy while still allowing views, keeping a lively dialogue between interior and exterior.

The design emphasizes the relationship between light, flow, and space. Each element plays a role in creating an inviting atmosphere, where careful planning and execution encourage a sense of discovery and connection. Through its thoughtful approach, it provides a refined experience that enhances daily life for its users.

The Next House: USA — A Global Call to Reimagine the American Suburb

`
Competition organisers

Buildner is launching The Next House: USA, a global architecture competition that challenges architects, designers, and thinkers to reimagine the American suburban home for the 21st century. For decades, the suburban house has symbolized comfort and stability, but today it often reflects excess, isolation, and environmental strain. This competition asks: how can the American home evolve to address climate urgency, economic pressures, and shifting social values?

Participants are tasked with designing a prototype home of no more than 1,500 sq ft (≈140 m²) for a household of two adults and one child. The design should be compact yet generous, adaptable, sustainable, affordable, and replicable across diverse U.S. contexts. More than a design exercise, the competition aims to spark a conversation about how homes can support healthier, smarter, and more connected communities.

The total prize fund is $20,000 USD. The final registration deadline is May 20, 2026, and winners will be announced on September 22, 2026. The Next House: USA invites architects, students, and visionaries worldwide to redefine what the American home means today—and what it should mean tomorrow.
