Enso Yoga House is located in the village of Vale dos Moses in Portugal. It serves as a retreat for yoga practitioners, designed to foster a connection between individuals and the surrounding landscape. The design moves away from traditional building forms, choosing instead to reflect the essence of yoga through thoughtful spatial organization and flow.

CIRCULAR FORM

The building features three circular shapes that illustrate the different aspects of yoga practice. The lowest circle connects directly to the ground, anchoring the structure to the natural setting. This foundation resonates with the landscape, providing stability that is essential for a peaceful retreat environment.

TRANCE AND SPIRITUALITY

The second circle is dedicated to the state of trance, offering spaces for yoga practice and contemplation. This area encourages personal reflection while also promoting a sense of community among visitors. The uppermost circle represents closure or nirvana, designed for moments of transcendence. Here, practitioners can enjoy expansive views over the valley, deepening their connection to nature and the peaceful atmosphere.

MATERIAL CHOICES

Wood is the primary material used throughout the structure. It extends to both the building's framework and its finishing touches. This choice not only aligns with the retreat’s purpose of connecting with nature, but also supports traditional building methods. Working with wood helps reduce the impact on the environment, reinforcing a sustainable approach while providing a warm and inviting feel inside.

DESIGN DETAIL

The layout encourages movement within the space, allowing visitors to flow between the circles. Each transition reflects the journey of yoga, guiding individuals from the grounding experience of the lowest circle to the elevated feelings fostered in the upper circle. The thoughtful engagement with the landscape invites residents to connect with their environment, enhancing their overall experience at the retreat.
