Charred Wooden Shingles and Structural Insulated Panels Forming an Energy-Efficient Modular Residence

Project in-detail

Constructed with charred wooden shingles and structural insulated panels, the energy-efficient residence embodies modular design principles while providing flexible living solutions for modern lifestyles.
5 key facts about this project
01
Constructed using charred wooden shingles, enhancing durability and aesthetic appeal.
02
Incorporates structural insulated panels to maximize energy efficiency and insulation.
03
Features a bent A-frame design that optimizes structural integrity and aesthetic simplicity.
04
Includes a self-contained utility hub for efficient resource management and independence.
05
Adaptable modular units allow for flexible living arrangements to meet diverse needs.

The project represents a modular and sustainable living solution, focusing on the concept of a compact dwelling known as the Microhome. It aims to address contemporary issues surrounding housing affordability, ecological sustainability, and efficient use of space. This architectural design incorporates advanced materials and techniques while promoting a lifestyle that is less reliant on traditional, larger housing formats. The design emphasizes functionality, adaptability, and resource efficiency, making it an innovative alternative in modern residential architecture.

Sustainable Modular Design The Microhome project employs a modular design approach, allowing for flexibility in layout and functionality. Each module can be configured based on the homeowner’s needs and preferences, presenting an adaptable solution that can accommodate changing life circumstances. This modularity simplifies the assembly process, reducing construction time and costs significantly. The use of Structural Insulated Panels (SIPs) for walls and roofs enhances thermal efficiency, contributing to lower energy consumption and reduced environmental impact.

The incorporation of a self-contained utility hub sets this project apart. This hub integrates essential systems such as water management, filtration, and renewable energy technologies (solar energy systems). This thoughtful design not only streamlines infrastructure but also empowers residents with independence from traditional utility services. The use of sustainable materials, including aluminum alloys and timber laminated panels, further supports the project’s commitment to eco-friendly practices and resource management.

Innovative Connectivity and Aesthetics In addition to functionality, the design prioritizes aesthetics through the use of open spaces and natural ventilation. Cross-ventilation strategies are incorporated to reduce dependence on mechanical systems, enhancing indoor air quality. The choice of materials promotes a lightweight structure that blends seamlessly with its surroundings, creating a harmonious relationship between the built environment and nature.

Furthermore, the project encourages community engagement throughout the construction process, fostering a sense of collaboration among future residents. The emphasis on shared resources aligns with the broader objectives of sustainable living. The aesthetic quality of the Microhome enhances its appeal, proving that environmental responsibility and visual design can coexist effectively without compromising one another.

The pursuit of energy efficiency, modular adaptability, and community involvement embodies a holistic approach to modern architecture. Those interested in a deep dive into this project are encouraged to explore the architectural plans, sections, and designs, which provide comprehensive insights into the innovative ideas that inform this unique architectural endeavor.

The Mujassam Watan Urban Sculpture Challenge invites architects and designers to create iconic public sculptures for one of two sites in Saudi Arabia: Abu Hadriyah Road or the Tharwa Sea Front in Al-Khobar. Proposals should reflect Saudi identity, culture, and future aspirations.

`

The Mujassam Watan Urban Sculpture Challenge is an international architecture and design competition inviting creatives to shape the future of Saudi Arabia’s public spaces. With a total prize fund of €50,000, the competition calls for sculptural proposals that merge cultural symbolism with innovative design, offering participants a chance to see their concepts brought to life in a rapidly transforming national context.

Organised by Buildner in partnership with the Mujassam Watan Initiative, the challenge focuses on two prominent locations: Abu Hadriyah Road, a major highway and gateway into the Eastern Province, and the Tharwa Sea Front in Al-Khobar, a pedestrian-focused waterfront district. Designers must select one site and develop a sculpture that engages with its surroundings—whether addressing the fast-paced dynamism of a transit corridor or creating moments of interaction along a coastal promenade.

Proposals should be bold, site-specific, and rooted in narrative—drawing on themes such as heritage, national identity, transformation, and dialogue. Environmental responsiveness, material durability, and feasibility are strongly encouraged, as winning projects may be selected for actual construction.

Each submission must include four A2 landscape presentation boards, a cover image, and a written project description. The competition is open to professionals and students alike, working individually or in teams of up to four people. No professional license is required.

Registration is open until July 24, 2025, with final submissions due by August 27, 2025. Winners will be announced on October 1, 2025.
