The Kamzík TV Tower in Bratislava, Slovakia, is undergoing a comprehensive renovation aimed at updating its architectural significance while maintaining its historical integrity. Originally completed in 1975, the tower serves dual purposes: functioning as a broadcasting facility and a tourist observation point. This project represents an adaptive reuse approach that respects the past while responding to contemporary needs and environmental considerations.

The primary function of the renovated tower will enhance visitor engagement through expanded public spaces, including exhibition areas and leisure facilities. The design takes into account not only the structural requirements of the tower but also creates an environment conducive to social interaction and community gathering.

Focus on Interaction and User Experience

One compelling aspect of this renovation is the emphasis on accessibility and interaction. The design incorporates landscaped areas around the tower, creating green spaces that invite users to engage with the site. Various walking paths and seating areas will improve visitor flow and interaction with the surroundings. Interior spaces have been designed for flexibility to accommodate a range of activities, from exhibitions to events, reinforcing the tower's status as a community hub.

The exterior of the tower will feature a façade that blends modern materials with the original structure. Utilizing glass panels and metal cladding, the design enhances visibility and establishes a dialogue with the skyline. The choice of materials like reinforced concrete for structural durability, along with the incorporation of sustainable elements, marks a thoughtful approach to modern architecture.

Innovative Environmental Solutions

The integration of green roofs serves to improve energy efficiency and promote biodiversity. This aspect of the design not only addresses environmental performance but also contributes to the aesthetic appeal of the tower. By incorporating natural elements into the architectural framework, the project seeks to create a harmonious relationship between the structure and the landscape.

In addition, the design employs passive strategies to optimize natural light and ventilation. The layout ensures that spaces within the tower benefit from day lighting, reducing reliance on artificial lighting and enhancing overall energy performance.

The Mujassam Watan Urban Sculpture Challenge invites architects and designers to create iconic public sculptures for one of two sites in Saudi Arabia: Abu Hadriyah Road or the Tharwa Sea Front in Al-Khobar. Proposals should reflect Saudi identity, culture, and future aspirations.

`

The Mujassam Watan Urban Sculpture Challenge is an international architecture and design competition inviting creatives to shape the future of Saudi Arabia’s public spaces. With a total prize fund of €50,000, the competition calls for sculptural proposals that merge cultural symbolism with innovative design, offering participants a chance to see their concepts brought to life in a rapidly transforming national context.

Organised by Buildner in partnership with the Mujassam Watan Initiative, the challenge focuses on two prominent locations: Abu Hadriyah Road, a major highway and gateway into the Eastern Province, and the Tharwa Sea Front in Al-Khobar, a pedestrian-focused waterfront district. Designers must select one site and develop a sculpture that engages with its surroundings—whether addressing the fast-paced dynamism of a transit corridor or creating moments of interaction along a coastal promenade.

Proposals should be bold, site-specific, and rooted in narrative—drawing on themes such as heritage, national identity, transformation, and dialogue. Environmental responsiveness, material durability, and feasibility are strongly encouraged, as winning projects may be selected for actual construction.

Each submission must include four A2 landscape presentation boards, a cover image, and a written project description. The competition is open to professionals and students alike, working individually or in teams of up to four people. No professional license is required.

Registration is open until July 24, 2025, with final submissions due by August 27, 2025. Winners will be announced on October 1, 2025.
