5 key facts about this project
## Project Overview
The Scalæ Cabins project is situated in the rugged terrain of Latvia, intended to serve as unique shelters for hikers. These structures are designed to blend with the surrounding landscape, functioning as both resting points and observation platforms that enhance the experience of the Latvian wilderness.
### Spatial Configuration
The architectural concept is based on the idea of scales, which informs both the functional and aesthetic aspects of the cabins. The design prioritizes flexible interior layouts to accommodate communal gatherings while providing privacy to users. Large windows capture views of the landscape, ensuring an immersive interaction with nature. Elevated on pillars, the cabins minimize ground disturbance, promoting environmental conservation.
### Materiality and Sustainability
The construction employs materials chosen for their environmental compatibility and aesthetic qualities. Wood serves as the primary structural material, chosen for its natural appearance and ease of maintenance. Mineral wool insulation enhances thermal efficiency, while wooden cladding harmonizes with the local tree textures. Additional sustainable features include waterproof membranes for weather resistance and screw pile foundations that reduce ecological impact. These elements collectively underscore the project's commitment to sustainability, including water collection systems to further decrease environmental footprint.
