The Split Tower serves as a prominent landmark in Iceland, designed to explore the connection between the European and American tectonic plates. Set against a unique geological landscape, the structure embodies themes of movement and stability. The design showcases two distinct volumes that visually reach for one another, symbolizing the interaction of these tectonic forces. This dual concept creates an inviting space that engages visitors while integrating with the surrounding environment.

Design Concept

The overall design features two fluid forms representing the tectonic plates. These volumes establish a dynamic experience for visitors, inviting them to reflect on the natural forces at play. The tension between the two structures acts as a central focus, highlighting the concept of geological separation. Within this serene landscape, the architecture encourages a sense of movement and curiosity.

Interior Functionality

Inside The Split Tower, spaces are multifunctional, designed to enhance the visitor experience. Each level includes thoughtfully placed viewpoints that allow guests to engage with the scenery outside. Amenities such as an information desk, café, and rest areas provide comfort and accessibility. The extensive use of glass helps blur the lines between indoor and outdoor, drawing nature into the heart of the structure.

Material Choices

Material selection plays a critical role in the design’s storytelling. Different types of wood symbolize the two tectonic plates, with one volume featuring untreated wood that will naturally change with the climate. The second volume is finished with burnt wood, offering a contrast that emphasizes tradition and durability. This careful choice of materials aligns with the project’s geological theme and highlights a commitment to sustainability.

Ecological Considerations

The design incorporates various ecological features, such as rainwater harvesting and geothermal energy solutions. These elements ensure the structure operates sustainably within its environment. By integrating these systems, The Split Tower serves as a point of interest while promoting ecological balance in the surrounding area.

The interplay of materials becomes evident in the contrast between the untreated wood and charred surfaces, symbolizing the narratives of geological change and stability within the natural landscape.
