The Dimmuborgir Visitor Center is located in the Black Lava Fields of Dimmuborgir, Iceland. It serves to educate and engage visitors while showcasing the unique geological features of the site. The design responds to the area's rich cultural stories and natural beauty, creating an inviting space for those interested in exploring the local myths and landscapes.

Design Concept

The main idea behind the visitor center is to connect nature with architecture. Visitors are greeted by sweeping views of Lake Myvatn as they travel along a winding black concrete path leading to the building. This journey builds anticipation, encouraging guests to reflect on the stories of the region before entering the center.

Architectural Features

The building itself resembles a black castle, featuring simple geometric forms that parallel the surrounding volcanic structures. Positioned on a plateau, it promotes a strong relationship between earth and sky, inviting visitors to ponder their place within the landscape. A low wall within the site serves as a visual break, enhancing the experience by drawing attention to the area’s natural beauty and the myths that surround it.

Interior Layout

Inside, the visitor center is organized across several levels, each serving distinct purposes. The main level includes administrative offices, a café, and spaces for informal lectures. The lower level focuses on exhibitions that highlight the local geology and folklore. This multi-level design allows for different experiences while maximizing views of the captivating landscape outside.

Sustainability and Materiality

Sustainability is a key goal for the visitor center. It aims for LEED Platinum certification by using renewable energy sources such as geothermal wells and hydropower. The building incorporates water management systems, including rainwater collection and advanced treatment technologies. The exterior is clad in charred wood, helping it blend with the volcanic environment, while warm wood on the interior creates a welcoming space for visitors.

In its design, the Dimmuborgir Visitor Center reflects both practicality and cultural significance, providing a thoughtful environment for understanding the rich myths and natural wonders of the region.
