Black Barn - Painters' Lake House is located in rural Lithuania and serves as both a living and working space for artists. The project reflects the artistic ideas of Vilhelm Purvitis, focusing on the relationship between art and the landscape. The design encourages interaction with nature while maintaining a practical environment for creativity.

Architectural Concept

The design presents a modest presence in its natural setting. It utilizes folded planes to create interconnected spaces that meet the practical needs of those who will use it. This approach promotes a balance between the structure and its surroundings, allowing it to blend into the landscape rather than dominate it.

Spatial Arrangement

The southern facade angles inward to form an inviting garden space. This garden is flanked by tall trees, offering further connection to the environment. An old well incorporated into the landscaping serves as a historical touch, enriching the experience of those who engage with the space. The design ensures that all living areas provide views of the lake, enhancing the occupants' connection to the tranquil setting.

Interior Dynamics

Inside, the layout consists of two levels that encourage both visual and physical links to the outdoors. The main living area features terraces that follow the slope of the land, creating a space that faces the lake. Natural light fills these areas, especially in the workshop, where soft north light creates a calming atmosphere. A conversation room, separated from the primary space by a large fireplace, provides a cozy and quiet space for reflection.

Materiality and Detail

Charred wood planks dominate the structure's surface, offering a warm texture that complements the changing seasons. This choice of material emphasizes a connection to the natural materials found in the area. The visible structure invites local wildlife to inhabit the building, enhancing the interaction between the design and the surrounding ecosystem. Each detail is purposefully considered, demonstrating a respect for both the environment and the artistic heritage of the region.
